Move over Band of Brothers and Make Way for The Pacific

It looks like Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collabarated again to eclipsed arguably the best ever war movie ever made. The Pacific is a miniseries airing on HBO tomorrow night and from the previews, it could very well replace Band of Brothers as the best. The series will be airing each Sunday through May 16th.

I've watched Band of Brothers so many times, I can quote dialogue....but I keep watching it because it is that good. It would be hard to believe that the producers could out do themselves unless you ask James Cameron what he thinks

This is the only reason i get HBO. Band of Brother on Blu-Ray was the reason I got a PS3. Not MGS4 or FF XIII, Band of Brothers.

Was Band of Brothers a mini series like the John Adams episodes? Or was it actually a seasonal episode? Cause i loved the John Adams mini series and always wanted to watch BOB but never did. Alot of these premium channel series are so good....Weeds on Showtime is a great show too...really want to watch The Tudors and the HBO Rome series as well.

I never even finished BoB... I think the last ep I watched (was able to watch...) was when they found the camps...

I take it TP is going to be like The Thin Red Line and etc...

"the intertwined stories of three Marines..."

I see they're going to have some fun again with this...

First it was Shaving Ryan's Privates... The Thin Red Behind... Band o' ButtBros... Now The Pacific Rimming?

Wonder what took TP so long to come about? I didn't even know about it 'til the ads started... Been 8.5 years since BoB...

I'm sure I'll take a look... But never finished BoB (maybe I'll try again), but couldn't get myself to watch Ryan recently though, either...

Tom Hanks on WWII: We wanted to annihilate the Japanese because they were “different”.

Too bad Tom is a moron. Did he conveniently forget about Pearl Harbor?

Band of Brothers is really good. I hope The Pacific isn't going to as slanted as his opinions.

BoB was indeed a 10 part mini series. I forgot about Rome (even though I own both seasons on DVD).

Hes not a moron, just misinformed. I dont claim to know alot about history, but the portrayal of Japaness at the time was just that...they are different and they attacked us and therefore should be eliminated. I wont get into a debate, because we could go on all night about the Japanese in that decade.

During conflicts, it wasn't uncommon to demonize the opposition. Doing so made it easier to justify killing them. This wasn't just present in the Pacific theater during WWII, but also in the European theater.

Examples:

As for the events of Pearl Harbor, and more importantly the decisions the US made prior to Pearl Harbor, is a completely different story which I won't elaborate on here.

HBO.com accidently posted the first episode online for anyone to stream, but they took it down when I was about 15 minutes in

Can't wait to see it in HD though

I hear that this is much much more graphic and intense than Band of Brothers. Going to be a sobering experience. Still, I'm almost giddy to watch this. I've been waiting a long time for this to air ever since I heard about it a a year or so ago.

Japanese monkey attacking the white woman. There are so many other anti-Japanese posters from that era depicting Japanese as sly, sneaky, snake-like, with desires to rape or do something to white woman. Totally unfair, but so justified at the same time (for the time, of course).

We wanted to annihilate the Japanese because they were “different”.

You're missing the issue. We didn't want to annihilate them simply because they were different.
We did NOT go to war with them because they were different.
Demonizing the enemy is common place, but they weren't the enemy because they were different.
Understand WHY we went to war with them?

My only complaint is I feel like this ground was already covered amazingly well by flags of our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. I respect Tom enough to give this one a look. I'm sure it'll be great.
