Just like anything apple does (Macbook Air gen 1, Iphone gen 1, Ipod Touch gen 1), always avoid the first gen. It's simply made to take money from the Apple cult.
If you get anything Apple, always buy gen 2 or gen 3 when they add normal things like usb, mms, etc, and charge a decent price.

LOL @ butthurt Mac fanatics:
"I guess there is a reason why Steve Jobs is a billionaire and you are a penniless technoblogger." "I am unsubscribing immediately. Thank you Mr. Gruman for making the final push!" "As to the iPad, the opinions expressed in this article are nothing more than a FUD bowel movement. This old IT trick has become utterly boorish and tiresome. FUD practitioners operate with all the brain power of Detroit in the early 1970's. If you want to identify a real fool, locate any technologist who claims otherwise." "If the iPad was like North Korea, Safari wouldn't exist on it and the outside world would be closed to you. You are free to roam about the world, but you can find comfort within the confines of the App Store." (I think this guy missed the point of that analogy) If the author were taking a dig directly at Mac owners, I would understand... but these people take anything written about Apple personally. I love Mac's hardware, but their community drives me away from purchasing one for myself.

But the hardware is the exact same as a PC. So you should say you love Mac's "software" right?

the very last sentence made me snicker
"Let's hope most Apple fans are as smart as they claim to be." smart enough to pay twice the cost for the same hardware, a bastardized version of an open source OS.. and a pretty case. I for one will never pay apple a dime, really just because of the cult of Steve Jobs, yeah sure he had some great visions of what computing could be in the 70's but with all of that acid in his head he probably had some great revelations about the consistency of bread as well. it's like buying an Audi when the VW is the same damn thing without the hardwood dash.. pure penis extension

Aw... don't bring Audi into the argument. VW has lots of fine cars but no equivalents to the A6/S5 line and above.

Oh well, the whole apple vs pc argument is old and stale. Mac will come out with stuff thats been around in concept or actual devices and the mac crowd will claim its better because its apple. Those that actually care about technology will always know better and treat apple products as what they are, redesigned concepts from others with a few small innovative changes.

I know too many Applephiles and sure enough a good handful of them preordered these things on day one. At least some of them did have some reservations about waiting beyond version 1.0 but still they're retarded

Who is Galen Gruman and why should we be giving a crap about his opinion?
I know exactly what I'm buying into. An iPhone with twice the screen size. This makes me a fool? I bought a launch iPhone, launch 3G and launch 3GS. I'm glad I made all those purchases. So are my mother and sister who love to bits their hand-me-downs. Launch iPad will be superceeded a year later by a better version. Err, hello? Welcome to every other phone/gadget/tech on the planet, dumbass. This guy is a dick. That's my opinion. Should that be a headline, now?

Show me another solid milled aluminum, lit keyboard, glass trackpadded, 9+hrs battery life notebook for under 1100$ and we'll talk... Not to mention the built in i-sight is leaps and bounds better than the majority of cameras included in PC based laptops - even the more expensive ones! I will never trust my education to a PC laptop again. I've been there, and I've been burnt. I've yet to have a single problem with an apple notebook - and I've had many with the slew of IBM/Lenovo thinkpads I've also owned.

I admit I'm intrigued by the iPad simply because it brings some attention to one my favorite things, tablet PCs and tablet computers in general. I can appreciate the form factor and actually love my tablet PC and use it in ways that a standard laptop isn't as nice or practical and an iPad can also be used in those situations, as an eReader in the bed that sort of thing.
But to be honest people don't seem to be drawn to those usage scenarios. Their phone or laptop still do all they want or need in the situations that they want or need. Tablets will for the foreseeable future still be very gadgety types of things that really don't address a big need in most peoples day to day lives. Unlike devices like the iPod and iPhone that already had established markets for their respective product categories, namely portable music players and mobile phones. I think its safe to say that these markets were WELL established before Apple put their offering in the market. Yes the devices were successful but they were a simply new spin in a established markets. The iPad is not nearly as fortunate. Its a totally virgin market, at least in the consumer space and consumers just have never seemed to much want and need these types of devices. That said, there will be a good bit of demand for these devices. Even as niche as the Tablet PC market is, it has been around for seven years and OEMs keep making new models on a yearly basis so somebody likes the idea of tablet computing. And the iPad definitely has attractive characteristics in it's weight, size and battery life. I really do hope some of these devices will have support for ink. Touch is great but it's really nice to be able to whip out the pen and whip out some text, its faster for me overall than the touch screen keyboard.
