I'm stuck with this problem here.. :)

I installed Ubuntu Gutsy, first linux install ever for me. So far I am loving it, but my sound is not working at all. I have googled a bit but I can't really find a solution (or well, I did find a solution but that didn't work for my machine). Does anyone here maybe have more info on how to get this Realtek audio working?

Thanks in advance!

I just installed 7.10 on my laptop. For the Broadcom wireless, I had to enable proprietary drivers from Software Sources. I was then able to enable it via the Resricted Drivers Manager.

My problem isn't wireless - it's the sound :) Wireless is working fine here aswell.

Is the volume enabled or unmuted?

Open a terminal and type in 'alsamixer' and see if the master volume is muted or set to 0. The Realtek HD audio controllers should be supported out of the box.

I have checked all that when googling for solutions, nothing is muted as far as I see.

You have "external amplifier" checked or unchecked? Sometimes that makes a difference

What's the output of the command 'lsmod'?

This is what I get.

My problem isn't wireless - it's the sound :) Wireless is working fine here aswell.

I read the first post. I knew your issue wasn't with wireless. I was just describing a process I used that may have been helpful. Glad you got it working.

Glad you got your problem sorted out, though I am a little surprised to see you needed to follow steps that involved recompiling alsa stuff.

Just out of curiosity, was this on your desktop with the Asus P5W motherboard, or your notebook?

Ahhhh. Originally I thought it was your desktop, which was really confusing me since I was almost sure it should work out the box.

Now that I know it's your notebook, some quick Googling turns up the fact that the version of ALSA in Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't properly support the sound device in the Compal and you needed a newer version of ALSA. Guess the Realtek in the Compal is really new, or different from other Realtek Azalia chips.

Yeah it's pretty weird. What I did basically was install the newest .15 ALSA and changed the snd-hda-audio model to "=toshiba" in alsa-base file. I had previously only tried it with "=auto" and "=3stack", which was described in other guides. :)
