First time build, is it worth the extra money to go quad?

I plan on building a gaming rig, preferably one that can run Crysis at high settings for $1000. I was wondering should I spend the extra money and go quad, or should I just get a C2D? If I go C2D I plan on getting the E6750. How long do you guys think this processor would last me? If I go quad I plan on waiting for the 45nm Yorkfield 2.5GHz Q9300 to come out in January, which will replace the Q6600. All in all I want a processor that will last me at least 2 years.

This will help you determine whether or not the quadcore is for you...

If you plan on upgrading in 2yrs, you can stick with a dual core for now. But in 2 yrs, the CPUs will have integrated memory controllers, so you'd need a new mobo along with that new quad (or maybe eight) core CPU. Also, future games will make use of the extra cores. If you have the budget for it, go for the Q6600. The performance difference between it and the Q9300 won't be much -- not enough waiting for, IMO. Its all on you, though.

I'd probably wait for 45nm quad. But you could buy a cheap dual core chip to hold you over till then like a 2180

With $1000 I'd get something like this: (newegg prices)

Case - Lian Li PC-7B plus II ---------------- $90
Mobo - Abit IP35 -E --------------------------- $90
GPU - 8800GT ------------------------------- $280
RAM - 2 x 1Gb cas 4 ddr2 800 Gskill ----- $70
DVD - any 20x DVD burner ----------------- $30'ish
HD - my pref = WD 160Gb SATA --------- $50 -- you might need more space?
PSU - my pref. --------------------------------- $80 (500-600W = $80-100 for a good brand)

CPU - E2180 ------------------------------------ $92

subtotal ======== $782

+ 22" flat panel = $220'ish

Total ======== $1000

I wasn't sure if you needed to price in OS - (Win XP $90), KB / mouse, or speakers

The E2180 CPU overclocked to 3Ghz+- should hold you over 6+ months until you can get a cheap 45nm quad. (if not longer)
