Is it an HD-TV? You can always set lower resoultions (i.e. 720P) and use composite.

Also, if you decide to do in store pick-up please complete the whole order online (i.e. add the movies to your cart online) because the stores will not honor the two movies, I had to return the item then come back home to replace the orders with the movies.

composite is 480i.

and component is capable of outputting 720p/1080i/1080p, but due to HDCP blu-ray and HD DVD get downscaled to 540p over component. only HDMI and DVI will allow 720p/1080i/1080p from blu-ray or HD DVD players.

I didn't see this...r u sure?

Yes, 300 and Bourne Identity are inside the player's box:

You mean they CAN get downscaled - they are not enabling the ICT now or likely in the foreseeable future.

Component will work fine for playing HD DVD content. I have an older Mitsubishi that maxes out at 1080i over component.

It will even work fine for upscaling your DVD's to 1080i provided you are doing so from backups (DRM removed) and not the original commercial disc ( I speak from experience as I was doing this tonight with my new HD-A2).

no one has actually activated the downsampling in the movie industry, and thats not how it worked anyway.

you can get 720p/1080i out of component, and only needed hdmi for 1080p. needing hdmi for 1080p is part of the aacs copy protection scheme, and only at 1080p would you get downsampled without an hdcp connection.

but like I said, for now its moot, as its not active.

Wait until next week, and the A3 will have 10 free movies at bestbuy. 3 at checkout, 2 in the box, 5 by mail.

I got this for $99 on order w/ Best Buy right now. They are swapping out the backordered HD-A2s for the A3.

If you're in AZ you scan your receipt?
Which BestBuy?
This morning I went to the BB by me at the Chandler mall and they refused to price match Fry's $99 A3. Ultimate Electronics said they'd price match if I had a receipt fro a local store showing it.

If you can help I'd appreciate it.

thx

RIP Blu-ray. :D

Now if only Toshiba's high end models got a 50% price reduction, I'd be happy. Until then, I'll stick with my OPPO '980 DVD player. :)

This is an online order, I ordered the HD-A2 as they had them for $99 which appeared to be a response to the Walmart deal. They sold out real quick but you could still order them by using a Google cached page. Best Buy then sent an email that they won't be getting anymore A2s in and they will be swapping the A3 for the same price, so a pretty smoking deal.

add changed

HD-A3 $199
2 movies in box (300 and bourne identity)
3x movies of choice under $34.99

The online system is still trying to charge full price for the movies though

I too am getting the A3 in lieu of the A2, thanks BB

But they will not honor the 2 free movies at time of purchase, which had I know about it I could have gotten in

Well I picked my A3 up yesterday. I have it hooked up to a Phillips 47" 1080i projection HDTV. My TV only has component connections but the picture is nothing short of fantastic.

Fortunately I have both types of players and enough connections to stop/pause each at similar scenes to see quality differences. One of the films I picked up was the 1985 version of Dune. Even on a film that old the quality differences are noticeable, in fact some of details just in clothing textures is enough to catch your eye.

I haven't decided on what the next five will be, but I also have Serenity as well as the two included in the box, Bourne Identity and 300. I have the Matrix collection (CC price error awhile back) and now I can finally view it!

Oh, boot time on this thing is almost thirty seconds

Shivetya, I've been thinking of picking this up, too, but my HDTV also only has component connections. Some questions:

1. How are you connecting the sound? Are you using an optical cable? It's my understanding that without an HDMI receiver, you won't get the upscaled sound; still, is the sound you *are* getting exactly on a par with standard DVDs or subjectively do you think that's improved?

2. When you watch a standard DVD on this player (which would output at 480p), how does that look, quality wise? I'm currently using a Denon 1600 and visual quality for this player has been fantastic. I have an extremely large collection and would hate to "downgrade" quality of my normal dvds. Realize this is subjective but would appreciate your thoughts.
