Anti-static floor mat for desk chairs?

I'm looking for a, preferably stylish, floor mat that isn't a hard plastic that will conduct electricity for standard home carpeting. Last time I had a plastic chair mat I killed a motherboard because of the static the mat generated, needless to say I went medieval on that mat after that.

What do you folks recommend?

I couldn't think of anywhere else to put this, I thought this forum is the most general of all on Hard, heh.

Finally did some correct search terms and it looks like your average office store has some:

Yikes. That looks a bit spendy. I would focus more on making yourself less static prone (touch metal, wear anti-static wristband), since that would be cheaper. Never heard of anti-statis floor mats before.

Typical plastic floor mats create a lot of static especially during winter months; you'll be better off leaving the carpet alone and using an anti-static wristband.

Anti-static hard plastic chair mats can be obtained at Frys at low prices.

Deflecto Corp. (Chair Mats):
45" x 53" Lipped Chair Mat $24.99
FRYS.com #: 325699
http://www.frys.com/product/3256991?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

36" x 48" Lipped Chair Mat $18.99
Deflecto Corp. (Chair Mats):
FRYS.com #: 3256981

I purchased the larger size and it provided me with 8 years of service before I replaced it with another one of the same size 2 years ago.
One minor consideration with all plastic mats - whether they be anti-static or not - is that the weight of your chair will create
a depression in the mat (a depression not a perforation) causing the rollers of your chair to drift into that particular depression if you later elect
to reposition your chair on the mat. This will not be a concern if you like to have your chair always placed in the same position on the mat when you sit at your desk, if
you want to reposition your chair 1/8 - 1/2 inch away from your 'usual' placement it is unlikely you will be able to do so and sustain that without you finding the chair went back
into its former place on the mat.

If you have a choice between spiked and non-spiked I recommend the spiked version because the non-spiked version is going to slide around on your carpet.
When you are in the store examining your selection I recommend that that you lay it flat on the floor and examine the entire perimeter to ensure that it has no edges that are curled upward.
Curled edges will be a concern if you walk about your living room without shoes as you may be prone to stubbing your toe on the curled edge if you casually walk over the mat.
Wooden chair mats by design are non-spiked with smooth bottoms and they will also annoyingly slide about on your carpet, albeit they are not prone to form a depression as will your plastic mats.

Those two anti-static chair mats are manufactured by Deflecto.
Their web site is http://www.deflecto.com/index_main.a...spx?PageID=227
Their product brochure has some nice color photos of those two products along with their other floor mats that can be obtained in various sizes. Here is the link to that brochure:

The one's at FRYS are only $24.99 for a large mat and $18.99 for the medium sized mat. Are you presumably referring to the $129.99 - $159.99 mats at Office Depot?
