I have this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...00CL9D-8GBXL-PC3-12800-_-20-231-428-_-Product

I bought it for my old 2500k, now have a 4770k on a Z87 board. It's running @ 1600 (XMP settings). With GTA running, I'm using ~5gb memory with has me thinking about expanding to 16gb. My options:

1. Buy same kit to expand to 16gb. ~$65
2. Buy cheaper 1600 kit to expand to 16gb (Is it okay to mix/match pairs?) ~$55
3. Replace all with 16gb of 1866+ RAM. $130-sell RAM = ~$80
4. Do nothing, I'm not actually hitting the cap.

Thoughts?

well the best value option is to do nothing till it becomes a problem followed by just add another 2x4g the same speed as your current kit
but then if your system is just for gaming then the 4770k isnt much of a step up from the 2500k so maybe you dont care so much about spending a bit extra for a slight increase in cpu performance

if you were to sell your old kits and buy a new kit go for 2x8g as your more likely to get double sided sticks

this kit looks like decent value for anyone that needs to buy 16g ram in a overclocking system
G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-16GTX Timing: 10-12-12-31 $134.99

it can increase cpu performance in a cpu limited game roughly10% over your old ram

Yeah it's okay to mix and match pairs. You'll basically be operating at the performance of the lower-spec'ed of the two sets. Realistically, you're not going to notice a massive speedup or slowdown, even with overclocking RAM.

Just get the most affordable 2x4GB set you can and call it a day.

Just getting the same kit would be the easiest if you wanted to upgrade.

Went with a similar set to your suggestion - 2133 Cat 9 TridentX

It has a promo code for $10 off, so $119, then I'll sell my old RAM. Savings wasn't enough for me to have non-matching 1600 sticks. My OCD cost me a little. Thanks everyone.
