Hi All,

I'm helping my father get a monitor that is in the $300 range. He does not game and will not be using it to watch movies. It will be used for web surfing, email, etc...He does prefer a glossy screen. I'm starting to get completely confused about all the different options and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks so much

He did some looking around and came up with these and would love to have any input:
Dell Ultrasharp UZ 2715H $306.00

Dell P2714H IPS 27" LED - $339.00

Dell S2740L

I only try to buy ultrasharp stuff so that is where my vote is!

The UZ2715H is a first class POS with terrible out of box color presets and abysmally low contrast. Review here

Should not be considered as it makes use of LED PWM dimming (Side Effects). Review here

This one uses edge-to-edge glass which is extremely reflective and should not be considered unless your father can control his lighting well. Review here

Samsung 27" Wide Viewing Angle LED Monitor - S27D590P - AMAZON - $306.00
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-27-Inch-Viewing-Monitor-S27D590P/dp/B00IEZGW8C

Solid choice as it doesn't make use of PWM and has good color reproduction/presets. Review here (Use google translate)

I have no idea what this is, but I'm pretty sure it's old and overpriced as hell.

So you only buy monitors with poor quality control and random issues that are entirely exclusive to their brand?

I appreciate the feedback and links to review, very helpful. After I linked the 2nd samsung I thought it was an older monitor.

Does the Samsung S27D590P use similar edge to edge and may have problems with reflection like the Dell (S2740L)?

The Samsung AD-PLS panels (360/390/590 series) are matte. The glossy Dell S2715H is far less reflective than the S2740L, and PWM/Flicker free unlike the glossy 27" HP's (27BW/27 Envy/27xi).

Thanks for the heads up on the Samsung being matte, I had missed that. I'll check out the Dell you linked. Just realized I was reading your threads on wecravegamestoo...thanks for all the info.

Hello All,

I figured I would revive this thread because I just received a request for help from my sister. She is looking for the same requirements I originally posted in the thread a year ago but is willing to spend up to $350. She will only use the monitor for web surfing and emailing (no video or gaming)

My Dad ended up getting the Dell S2715H and loves it. I'm checking out the thread from NCX here for recommendations and the HP seems like a winner:

It's on Amazon for $119, which is quite a bit lower than anywhere else....seems a little strange to me:

For her purposes do you think she should be looking at a monitor with higher resolution? With a higher resolution will the txt be smaller and scaling needed? I'm not sure she needs it but would be interested to hear from others. Not sure if it matters but the monitor will be hooked up to a Macbook pro.

Thanks so much
