I got a 9800Gt and GTS 320 to try out...

Although they're not dead... just artifacting like crazy -_-

Both were EVGA and the guy didn't register either of them, and lost the receipt on the 9800GT and lied about his purchase date when he registered because he was going to try to make a fake receipt with a friend, in the end he gave up... long story... but now I have them...

The lead free solders used today flow at around 230C or 445F. The proper use of the proper heat gun will not necessarily blow other parts around.
Some good Google links.
and here.

The card's already dead... but I have a feeling this is a more consistent / less temperature method...

So if it does work, awesome, if it doesn't... nothing lost... it'll look the same as before...

The danger is in damaging the PCB with elevated temperatures for too long a period. I understand the nothing to lose position. Just offering a little more info for those that might be interested.

Well it half-worked on the GTS320... I doubt they're related but anyways..

It booted up fine, no artifacts, got to windows, found drivers, did some stress testing and saw temperatures were at 80c idle... went wtf? I started ATITool and temps rose to 100c before I shut it off...

I go to check the board and the fan isn't spinning at all...
I disassembled it all when I did it, and well I'm not positive if the fan worked before.

But I think that's still considered a success so far replacing the fan/heatsink isn't all that expensive and I think that's all it needs now...

Now time for the 9800GT

... 9800GT works flawlessly now...

I honestly can't believe this worked... but it did... 2 for 2...

Both would artifact during POST and beyond that... now they both don't artifact... the GTS has a bad fan, but that can hopefully be replaced with somethin...
Running ATI-Tool, GPU-Tool, and Furmark on the 9800GT to stress it.. hitting about 85c but that's only at 50% fanspeed (single slot 8800GT cooler, loud as fuck at 100%)
Wonder how long it will last...

Thats awesome. I have a EVGA 8800GTX here thats bad. I got the oven coming up to temperature now.
EVGA wouldn't warranty the card because of not registering it in time. This was my last EVGA purchase and I use BFG now. But is this works I could use it for a backup or test card.

Just remembered I also have a PNY 8800gts that artifacts. Its next.

I did it exactly how OP did... completely stripped down and elevated with some aluminum foil, GPU side facing down.

I don't know what matters and what doesn't but that's how I did it...

Running 3DMark 06 right now... then gonna install it back in my friends system so he can play again. (It's literally been sitting in the corner of my room waiting for a new GPU for a couple months)... and this revives it... for free

Using normal home oven for reflow is very valid strategy.

Or even hot plates.

First person to cook their video card while also cooking pizza rolls and post pics wins the internet.

OP, you have started a revolution! Amazing trick, and even more amazing that others are using it with consistent results.

I may try this tonight. I have an old x800gto and a 2900pro to try. Although neither artifacts, one just posts 'sometimes' and the other doesn't work at all, so I'm not expecting anything.

Toxic chemicals from heating electronics + your dinner = possibly unhealthy
