Anyone know of a good cheap printer? All it needs to do is print, and I'd like it to be fairly reliable and cheap to maintain. I print so little, I just can't justify a big expense. (I'll just print at work if I can't find something economical)

B&W or color. '
I bought a cheap Canon 3 in 1 inkjet on sale at Walmart for $20 usually about $30-40.
Older not wifi version of this: (XL cartridges B&W $20, Color $30, combo $45).

Basically you need to print once or twice a month or ink cartridges will dry out, fail.

If you let it sit for long periods Laser is better, toner will not dry out.
Would probably get a Brother monochrome printer and use aftermarket toner cartridges.
About 3500-5000 pages around $45

Dell won the last comparo I looked at for color:

aftermarket cartridges look reasonable.
Note all come with "starter cartridges" factor in eventual purchase or include as initial expense.
Some brand cartridges are common at staples/office max etc. Some are usually mail order.

That's a good point on the laser. I didn't think of that. More up front cost, but less hassle long term. (assuming I can get toner for it in the long term :) )

Toner cartridges are expensive, but they last a lot longer than ink.

Also, when an ink cartridge runs out or dries up, you simply can't print until it is replaced. Some printers that use ink won't even print B&W if the color cartridge is empty.

With toner, when it starts to fade, you can usually take the cartridge out and shake it a bit to extend its life.

I just got my sister that Brother laser. I'd recommend it if you just want a good basic printer.

Laserjets because they're bombproof. Parents have one that's 20 years old and still works. Mine has printed thousands of pages and still works great. Tons of genric toner cartridges available that work great.

Never buy an inkjet. They're not worth it even if you get the printer for free.

Large-ish caveat to that: Old HP's are bombproof, new ones? No better than anyone else, really.
