E2220, 5000+, 215, X4 9650 How do they compare?
What would be a better processor? It will be used for home office use, but I want it to be adaquete for the next couple of years. Because these are pre-built computers, I am limited to these choices. How different are these?
Intel E2220 Athlon X2 II 215 Athlon X2 5000+ Phenom X4 9650

If it is just strict home office and no slacking off from work then...
e2200 = Snappy and runs cool. Though its a bit old. X2 5000+ = Kinda old and not really the best bang for the dollar. Athlon X2 II 215 = Prolly the best choice. Its cheap, its low power, its new and not from last gen or two gens ago. A better CPU than the X2 5000+ and e2200. X4 9650 = A bit overkill for a home office unless you work for some video editing company. Even then it this isn't a great quad. Phenom 1 left much to desire.

pick up a amd athlon II x4 620 if you need a quad, if all your doing is running windows 7, word, and a browser you could get by with a athlon II x2 240. with room to spare for newer OS's

These are pre-built computers and I'm on a tight budget, so I can't really take suggestions. The X4 9650 is only $40 more than the Athlon X2 II 215, and the X4 9650 comes with a forth gig of RAM and doubles the hard drive space to 640GB. Both are the same brands.
So, how would the X4 9650 compare to the Athlon X2 II 215 in single/double threaded applications? Would the increase in 2 cores, 1GB of RAM, and 320GB of hard drive space make the second computer worth $40 more?

x4 9650 is much slower cpu than x2 215 in single/multi threaded apps.

It_shiro: Can you be a little bit more specific? How much slower is it? Would the difference be noticable in real world situations? Any benchmarks would be helpful.

x2 5000+ 45nm is basically x2 215, the only diff 215 run @ 2.7Ghz while 5000+ @ 2.2Ghz.

x2 215 is clock @ 2.7 GHz and x4 9650 is 2.3 GHz. new Athlon2 are about 30% faster per clock to old phenoms. So any app that can take advantage of 4 cores will general do better than x2 215. But 90% of the stuff in a office don't take advantage of 4 cores.

How does the Intel E5300 stack up against the Athlon X2 II 215?

Benchies
More Benchies And More You'll notice I put the X2 250 in the bench instead of the x2 215. Didn't have a choice, as it didn't have a link for the 215. As you can see the Phenom while no monster is pretty competitive with the CPU's you linked if not their superior in every test. For the price difference you said, with the added value of more RAM and HDD space. I personally would go with the Phenom. That said if you torn between two of them and don't go Phenom, please got with lt_shiro's advice and grab the Athlon II based system.

I've decided to go for the Athlon II. I decided that I only wanted to spend the extra $40 if it would noticeably be faster. Plus, I like that the Athlon is cooler. 320GB is more than enough space and I can grab the 2GB of RAM from my old computer. Hopefully 2 cores will be enough for me in the near future. Thanks for all of your help.
Here's a link to the computer if you're interested. (Just don't tell me bad things or make me regret buying it.) http://www.frys.com/product/6059138?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883103231

What kind of goofy ass memory configuration is this:
Memory Spec 2GB x 1 & 1GB x 1 Will that even run in dual channel? Otherwise @ OP, not a bad computer, I don't understand the 9200 chipset with an athlon II but as long as it works... Only real thing of concern would be "Power Supply 220W". Guess thats OEM's for ya.

That's single channel. OEMs do stupid things like that for their bottom line. I haven't heard the Acer brand name in quite a few years so I'm surprised they are still in business.

@ dedembryonicce11
you would surprise too know that Acer owns emachine and gateway. And over the years they have become major brand like HP and Dell.
