Looking for a netbook, need opinions
Ive decided I want a netbook just because. I dont have any specific use for it right now. Ive looked at quite a few and liked the way the screen and case of the Acer Aspire AS1410. The specs seem good to me and comes with Windows 7 already on it which seems like a plus to me. I have not found many places with real reviews for netbooks. I need opinions on this netbook and if there are better out there.

I purchased a Dell Mini 10v and everything I read on it has been great. I was looking at the HP Mini 311 (ION) and the Asus 1005HA but decided on the Dell. But it basically came down between the Dell and the Asus - both very good netbooks.
One of the biggest factors for me not going with the Asus was that it attracts finger prints like I've never seen before. And with a black cover/surface, that would drive me insane. The HP Mini 311 is a nice machine, something I've been keeping my eye on and when I went to configure it to what I wanted, the price just didn't work for me for what I would do with a netbook. I used Newegg.com as a starter and just worked off from there. I used mydellmini.com for all of the information regarding the 10v, read numerous write-ups on the HP 311 and just used Newegg reviews for the Asus 1005HA. Ultimately, I went with the Dell and couldn't have been happier.

The 11.6" CULV machines like the Acer 1410/1810TZ/1810T are much better near netbook sized machines. However, if you really want a netbook some of 10.1" Samsung's are very nice.

I think you misunderstood me. I think the CULV systems are great. I also think netbooks suck. I hated mine.

Arguably, the N10J is the best 10.1 netbook, as the 9300gs it has contains 256MB of dedicated graphics ram.
I have one, and a dv2-1030us. Love the dv2 more, despite it's noisey fan.

not to thread hijack but why are the advantages of a CULV over an atom based netbook?

CULV chips are actual, full fledged core 2 duo or core 2 solo chips.
the performance of them is above and beyond that of the atom. they also come with the current generation chipset and video (which is equivilant to an ATI 9600 of yore, instead of the weaker gma 950.)

Battery life is good, and while yes they are more expensive they are not much more so.

actually, battery life is amazing on my acer 1410 /w SU3500
it averages 5-7 watts of system usage. compared to the gma500+1.33 atom i had previously that averaged the same, or gma950+regular 1.6 atom that averages about 10. or my thinkpad X200 with a normal voltage core 2 that averages 10 idle.

can the 1410 /w SU3500 acutally play HD flash?
IF i get a netbook, i'm going to use it as a glorified PMP. so the abillity to play streaming video and 1080p output over HDMI is important. Last edited by mycomputersucks; 11-04-2009 at 01:18 PM..

It's a little iffy per owner accounts over on the forums at Notebookreview.com. I think it depends somewhat on the clip. That's where the 1410 w/ SU2300 should do better.

I just picked up a Lenovo s12 with an Nvidia ION GPU for $449. Here is the link for the deal if you are still interested: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1642416
Also for HD streaming adobe's next flash update will be able to access the GPU so hulu an youtube HD will be okay to go.

It depends what you are looking for. I love the Lenovo S10-2 we have....I dont use it for video or flash though and could care less about gaming on it. Works great for web surfing, pictures, email, and word/excel docs.
Doesnt need to be any faster or have any better graphics.
