You don't really need a NB, do you?

Thought some of you might get a chuckle out of this one...

So I am putting together my gaming RiG and have everything laid out, all the tubes measured and cut...determined to go full water cooling...screw that lame NB water block on the Maximus...I mean I have voltage reg, nb, sb, mem blocks all ready to go....the Lian-li is prepped like a heart transplant patient to recieve all this goodness...I carefully discharge my static, attach all the proper mounting brackets to the ASUS mobo, then gently remove the NB heatsink...then a little less gently...then...pop...NB heat sink in my hand, still attached to the NB...I mean this is as close to seeing your buddies head blown off as it gets in geekland...a truly traumatic sight..there in my hand...still firmly attached to the stock water block is a northbridge , the whole thing, chipset, board, dozens of ultra this copper filaments dangling from the empty socket...a neurosurgeon probably had enough to work with to graft a human eye to the NB socket...I think I heard it scream...

...Good thing for Newegg and next day fedex.....BTW I decided to use the stock NB water block this time....it doesn't look so bad.

I've pulled some beauties, but I'll bet the expression on your face was priceless.

I think you popped off the IHS of the NB didn't you, to rip off the whole NB from the mobo would require tremendous force... the putty Asus put on the Maximus seems more like cement glue , if you want to replace the goo with eg AS5 do it before you start up the board as the goo hasn't done it's nuclear adhesive thingy.
I had to use a hair dryer to heat it up, then unpopped the SB and gently moved from left to right, it popped off after a few times , but the goo was all over the place...
Took an hour to clean it off with the Arctic cleaning kit

Angry

Pics...as requested...

The hair dryer is a good idea..in hindsight...though I guess anything other than my "pull like hell" method may have been advised.
Lets just make my new nickname, "Tremendous force", yes...I think I like that.

Sorry no pics of my facial expression.

Note to self. Do NOT take apart the heatpipe on Maximus boards.

It's doable but thakes some patience... though indeed not advisable though, but it helped reducing load temps on the NB by 5°C which for me is enough for the hour it took to get the putty off

Lol. I didn't have the gall to rma it...heh..

Dear Asus...I was just minding my own business when all of the sudden the NB leaped off the board, it struck me in the forehead and now I am having memory problems...you will be hearing from my disability lawyer....or perhaps you could just replace the mobo?...lol.

Perhaps a class action lawsuit? Anybody else with the leaping NB/heatsink projectile injury?

BTW, I did manage to rip off a IHS once...that stuck right back on, no problems. It's not like I have not built plenty of systems over the years either...just never quite screwed the pooch this bad before.

Ouch,

Well, at least now you are Nehalem ready. Just ahead of the curve as this time next year all our current boards will be just as useful.

Truly amazing!
I was expecting a ripped out IC will legs on its sides, not soldered pins across the whole surface.
That sure was Tremendous Force.

Just for kicks I then used the heatsink/northbridge unit to tow my 38 foot motor home up a steep hill...I connected one chain to the heatsink side and one to the northbridge side...
