Arrow Calling all Samsung 205BW owners

I’m very interested in purchasing this monitor to view PAL movies but can anyone confirm if it accepts 75Hz @ 1680 x 1050 via DVI? If so, I would also like to know its black levels and color quality (I know it has a TN panel but I need something to use about a year before I can get an S-PVA panel). So please click here and tell me which one of those monitors the Samsung resembles and click the two images (image 1, image 2) and inform me about its color rendering (grayscale) abilities.

Thank You

While 1680x1050 @ 75Hz is possible over DVI, it isn't recommended. Some users have reported problems doing that. There is very little backlight bleeding. It is most noticeable along the top, but it's such a small amount it does not affect movies or anything else. The color representation is very good. I'm not sure what exactly you want me to tell you about the two pics, but they look great to me.

samsung 205bw

any reason u planning to run on 75H, satisfied 205bw owner here, backlight bleeding is negligible in my opinion, mine has zero dead/stuck pixels n i hardly made any adjustments frm factory settings, only reduced the brightness to around 45% n contrast a little as i found it too bright, as techweenie mentioned color rep is great, thres no pivotting of the screen tho' but to me thats an option i can live without. Abt the 2 pix, cant say what youre refering to so no comments...cheers

Thx for the replies guys

The two images on my original post can expose most poor quality monitors. On poorly configured monitors, dark blue/grey tons may appear as purple. This was apparent on the Samsung 940MW.

As for 75Hz, it’s a must for as I’m very sensitive to picture jumps when playing PAL (25/50fps) videos on a 60Hz display.

PS: (techweeni) What kind of problem were they when using 1680 x 1050@75Hz?

In case you don't know, the refresh rate makes no difference on LCD monitors. They do not flicker like CRT's. The issue at 75Hz was something about a corrupted screen in games, but the desktop was normal, but only when using the DVI cable. The problem was not present with the VGA cable.

I wasn’t talking about flickering; I was talking about jumps in motion. To play PAL videos smoothly, you need a monitor that can display 25Hz, 50Hz, 75Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz etc…. Anything other then that will cause inconstant motion or elevated juddering.

There is a little bit of bleeding, but a problem? No.

When I list all the modes under display properties/adapter, at 1680x1050 only 60Hz is supported. At a smaller resolution like 1440 x 900 it does offer 75Hz. So it looks like at full resolution only 60Hz is available. If you selected 1440 x 900 you could get 75Hz and it would be in a smaller (19" widescreen size) window centered on screen. I'm using a X800XT video card, but I think it is just showing me all the modes the monitor is capable of.

If you uncheck the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" option, more refresh rates will appear. However I don't recommend using more than 60Hz with a DVI connection, but if you decide to try it you do it at your own risk.

Or use the D-sub connection.
