I don't want any fileserver capability as I have that :-)
I want a dedicated low-power machine separate from the fileserver. Else I have to run everything (including the fileserver) each time I want to access just the webserver.
Perhaps something using the baytrail J1900D2Y?
I currently have one server that is both media fileserver and webserver/mailserver (only mail archiving etc).
However this requires that everything is up and running each time I want to access something. I want to move all webserver/mailserver stuff to a new machine. My requirements

the supermicro 'certified' memory list for X10 boards is indeed very tiny :/
I decided to go ahead with ordering the Kingston, as I found other reports that it would work with this motherboard. And as you said, the price is not THAT enormous so you could buy another brand/unit if needed
as...
as far as I could google it's a 'Bill-of-Materials' that makes sure the memory fits the exact specs required by the motherboard. I however don't understand the rest of the sentence :D
@ Volkum, could you elaborate?
Tbh, ordering in america would be very beneficial for me (as the euro/dollar ratio saves me quite a bit), but I haven't been able to find a decent store that ships all the stuff I need (xeon, supermicro-motherboard,...) and also accepts paypal :D
they're quite expensive :/
And I'd rather have 3 Tb drives (as I would like to buy 4 of them for the RAID5 array, and 4 of the HGSTs would cost me 200 euro more :/)
thank you for these answers! Any suggestions on which hitachi drive?
I know that the BTRFS development has had some shaky moments, and it still isn't upto par with other systems like ZFS. But I feel it's mature enough now for me to start using it :)
any particular suggestion?
I choose them because they're cheap and low-power.
Reviews (http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_red_nas_hard_drive_review_wd30efrx) did indeed indicate a lower performance, but I'm using this for the storage of movies/music/... so it's not meant for fast...
my current NAS is getting old and the drives are getting full :D
hence my idea to make a new one, and also make it a visualization platform for my other servers (webserver, some linux test server,...). The idea
* a main server backbone running fedora. The OS would be installed on a USB stick...
what's in the repo's is determined by the repository maintainers (being both developers and individual users), and the distro philosophy f.e. most of the fedora media packages (codecs etc) are not taken up in the main fedora repo but in the rpmfusion repo cause of license issues etc.
you can...
no packets get to the webserver, they're all blocked by the router. None of the ports I open up and forward, actually seem to be open to the outside world.
to answer your other questions
1) yes
2) yes, I can access it through http://192.168.0.132 from all my computers
also, I'm going to try...
Upper part is the port forwarding setup
Bottom part is the firewall rules (which are automatically generated from the forwarding setup rules)
The example shown above now shows port 8080, but it's the same for port 80 as well :)
OK, I redesigned the network and now router2 is just a wireless AP, all devices are now on the router1 network.
All ports forwarded and firewall set up. But I still end up with this (router1 logs)
When using online port checker tools, my port 80 is labeled as 'closed' ...
I even tried opening...
believe me when I say I tried this :D
but for some reason router1 doesn't seem to be able to handle all the devices (it continuously shuts down :/)
I might give it another try if I can't figure this out.
didn't know that, but that isn't the issue here. I have ran other webservers myself (but in easier network setups :p) and the ISP TOS does not state you cannot run a webserver yourself.
-> I set up everything now properly with port forwarding, but the magic still isn't happening. Is there a...
I figured as much but I couldn't locate it :p
I found an IP adress 192.168.0.135 on router2 ... I'll try this.
1) the other people are fine with it :)
2) why wouldn't the ISP allow it? :p
3) it has a dynamic ip, but that shouldn't be a problem as I'll be using dyndns (which can be enabled...
My network setup:
I am owner of part of the network (it's a building with several tenants), but I have admin access to router1.
My problem:
I want to set up a webserver attached to my switch. This would require all incoming internet trafic to be redirected from router1 to router2 and then to...
just curious, but why the mini-ITX?
my mini-ITX rig has a mini-ITX mobo because the case is ... well not fit for anything bigger :)
In your case you can clearly opt for a mATX mobo, which is often less expensive and has more expansion slots.
Dear [H] member
I'm looking for a small, affordable pocket-sized video camera
and would like to spend 200 dollars max on it. I don't have any previous experience with buying this kind of hardware, so bare with me as I divulge my 'demands':
- small & pocket-sized
- preferably 12 MP foto...
I'm looking for a DVI switch box thingy for 4 computers. I don't need a full-blown KVM switch, as allcomputers have separate (cordless) mouse / keyboard. As I don't know anything about DVI switches, I'd like to know what to look out for.
My current setup:
my gaming computer (SAPPHIRE HD...
Tbh, I have the same 'issues' as the thread starter. I also see higher speeds when I connect to my Fedora 10 SAMBA server from my WIndows 7 machine compared to other (Fedora 10) computers...
Could never figure out why... :/
Little Snitch is awesome. Each mac user should have it, just to be amazed how many connections each program makes :/
I do use MacScan to counter spyware; the only thing it ever finds are tracking cookies but hey :D
I also tried antivirus software but these things aren't necessary (imo).
first of all, tx for your remaks :)
- Will the 600W PSU be better for my currently selected videocard?
- ssd -> I'm not an expert on SSD's and it will bump the price right up... Do you suggest a small SSD (like 80gig orso?) -> if so, what should I opt for?
- as for the sugo cases; I agree...
Fist off, the obligatory questions :D

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming. I want to play 'Stronghold 3, Diablo 3, Empire: Total War: Shogun 2' at a high framerate with enough details! :)
2) What's your...
Hi,
I would like to start this thread by saying: 'if you don't like Mac, I understand, everyone his own opinion -> Just don't make this into a flame thread' :)
Off we go then.
Currently I own a macbook pro (don't mind my sig as it's outdate :p). My biggest pro's for this laptop (which I have...
Not to be of any nuisance, but I'm sticking to fedora :p
It's the linux system I started with and am more than familiarized with. It doesn't have ZFS indeed, but ZFS isn't without faults either (although it has a lot of benefits indeed) :)
I'll look into your LSI card there tho... I am not...
Okay, so I've used hardware RAID in the past (RAID5)....
However, I'm currently planning on upgrading my current fileserver and well.. I've been reading both positive and negative things on hardware raid... The biggest 'problem' I always had with hardware raid is when a controller dies, you need...
