    Worthwhile upgrade from a 4870 (512mb)

I recently upgraded from a 1GB 4870 to a 7850 for the 2GB of VRAM playing Skyrim with 4096x4096 textures and I'm very happy with that.

    Card to replace HD 4870?

Replaced my 4870 with an HIS IceQ X Turbo (factory overclocked to 1000MHz core frequency). The new card is actually a little shorter than the 9.6" 4870 was, so it fit my Antec SLK 3700-BQE midtower. It's quite silent and Skyrim temps run around 45C (ambient 28C). Unigine Heaven temps is 66C at...

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

Haven't noticed any banding and I use sRGB mode.

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

Try using a different mode (sRGB?) to see if that makes this defect less noticeable to your eyes.

Only thing that comes to mind is if the IPS glow bothers you. It does have it.

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

Sorry to hear that. :( Mine was officially open-box too as it was the one on display in the store. Only problem was a couple of easily wiped-off fingerprints on the screen..

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

I've installed the driver. Doesn't seem to make any difference. Came across this thread yesterday. There's some good info in there from a photography site perspective. Deals with the modes in particular. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1004&thread=37762466&page=1

Best 24" LCD for $500. No TN panels.

Mine was tested for bright/dead pixels at the store in front of me before I bought it.

Out of interest, who calibrates their screen?

The factory calibration on my ASUS is good enough for me at the moment.

Best 24" LCD for $500. No TN panels.

I haven't seen it personally but it is said to have a rather thick antiglare coating according to several threads in this forum.

You might want to give the ASUS PA246Q a look if P-IPS is to your liking. It has a 3 year no-bright-pixel warranty and is factory calibrated.. :)

Details of anti-glare sparkle on IPS screens?

PA246Q here. I see mine only occasionally and as like a tiny bit of dust on the white parts of screen.

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

Have you guys installed the Windows 7 driver that comes on the CD with the user manual? I'm wary of installing it as the monitor currently works great without it and I tend to be in the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' clan.

    I need a 24" widescreen

If the red stripe on the bezel is the only thing you dislike about the ASUS, a black Sharpie can fix that.

You're welcome. Glad to help. :)

So why is IPS considered so much superior to TN?

Learning something everyday. Looks like what I thought was a small amount of backlight bleed in the lower corners of my PA246Q is probably that IPS corner glow as its intensity varies if I move my head around while still looking at it. :)

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

I decided to keep the PA246Q. Plugged in my P-MVA one last time to compare and it seems it too has a similar 'ghosting' issue that I hadn't noticed the last 5 years. Methinks maybe I noticed it on the IPS mainly because I was sensitized by being warned about it on this type of panel in advance...

There is no moire pattern to be seen with the naked eye. It's an artifact from my camera for some reason.

They don't bother me. I'm posting the image for senna89 since he/she expressed concern over text clarity. Here's another pic. My camera had a bit of a problem focusing and the moire pattern was its fault.

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

Here's a pic for you to judge. I recommend you go to a brick & mortar store and see this monitor in action to make sure it is to your liking as far as text is concerned. http://www.imagebam.com/image/b9c949137636203

This is what AG coating does to LCDs (magnified)

I have no microscope but I just used my FZ-35 bridge camera to take a pic. The coating doesn't seem to make text less sharp on my PA246Q as far as my old naked eye is concerned. Image reduced from 4000x3000. http://www.imagebam.com/image/b9c949137636203

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

The coating on the PA246Q doesn't affect reading text. I only see it occasionally and part of me reacts like it's just a bit of dust on the screen. Same for my FP241 MVA. I only looked at a couple of TN monitors in the store and the murky colours turned me off immediately so I don't remember...

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

OK. I'm already used to the AG coating. Can only see it occasionally on some tints like beige. Photos and movies look spectacular. Only downside so far is when I play Oblivion. I play in first person and when I move rapidly to look around, the periphery becomes a blur. If I scan near a steeple...

    ASUS PA246Q: 24-inch, 1920x1200, IPS

My excellent BenQ 24" 1920x1200 FP241W P-MVA monitor is ~4.5 years old and the backlight is starting to flicker a tiny bit occasionally, plus there's a very slight burn-in in one corner. Friend of mine offered me $100 for it so I decided to get a new 1920x1200 24" monitor before this one goes...

How does the ASUS PA246Q compare with the BenQ FP241W?

Thanks a lot for the replies, folks. *thumbs up* :) I've reread the long thread about this monitor and response doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm a bit wary of the IPS glow and coating graininess but there's a brick & mortar store a couple of blocks away that has it in stock so I'll try to...

How does the ASUS PA246Q compare with the BenQ FP241W?

The back light of my BenQ FP241W P-MVA I love so much is starting to act up and I have someone willing to buy the monitor from me. Looking for a replacement for a reasonable price, I am thinking about the Asus PA246Q. I don't know the lag time of my BenQ but I have never experienced ghosting...

My BenQ FP241W 24" LCD monitor suddenly started flickering this morning. The brightness varies slightly now but it's noticeable.
