Ok, so Win 8 is growing on me...

After using Windows 8 a bit more, it’s growing on me. Just done a fresh install on my bloatware laden Acer Laptop, and it's running well.

I still hate metro, and the way it attempts to turn Window_*s*_ 8 into Window 8, but they seem to have made it easier to change file associations to the desktop based equivalents.
sfd
It goes > Open a file (such as a jpg) > See the fullscreen 'app' monopolize the display and close it with an "ewww" > Windows says 'you have other programs that can view this file' and lets me pick windows photo viewer.

It’s also possible to create shortcuts to shutdown and restart the computer which can be pinned to the bottom left hand side of the start screen so you don't have to go through several layers to get to them (would love it if they'd just add them as part of the screen)

Start screen search still needs to show 'non app' results without extra steps though

If you've tried W8 in the past and found it annoying, it might be worth giving it another go. Right now, I’d be happy to switch to W8 Permanently. Not necessarily enough to pay money to replace my current windows 7 licences depends on pricing. But if I got a new system I wouldn't be asking for a downgrade.

The only minor gripe I have with it now is the login screen defaulting to the last person who logged in, with no apparent setting to have it show a list of all users every time, anyone know how to change that?

Looks like Microsoft is Tweaking Multi-Monitor Support in Windows 8

http://www.neowin.net/news/huge-multi-monitor-enhancements-coming-in-windows-8

Apparently Microsoft put up a post on this subject on the building Windows 8 blog and then took it down again. Fortunately someone from Neowin spotted it first and was able to come up with the above article.

Microsoft seems to be hearing a lot of the complaints users of multi-monitor systems have been voicing. Still no Start Button though.

AHCI to IDE: Windows does not boot into Windows XP

Hello all,

As I was about to install Windos XP Pro on my *ASRock Motherboard 970DE3/U3S3*, it could not detect any hard drives, therefore in the BIOS I changed the AHCI to IDE and went along with the install.

After the Windows XP drivers are installed, I decided to go back to the BIOS and change this setting back to AHCI. To my surprise, Windows XP does not boot and it loops back to the BIOS text and it repeats the process.

The Hard Drive that I use is 36GB Raptor (NCQ). Does running on IDE, somehow "degrades" the preformance of this drive and my Windows experience?

Thanks!

After dealing with lots of "A required CD/DVD driver is missing errors", I got the system to boot into the new OS. However, I'm sitting at the "Preparing your Server Screen" and it's at 5%. An hour ago, it was at 4%.

I'm running a Asus E35M1-M Pro with 4G ram. The HDD is a Caviar Green. Is there some explaination to why this is taking forever?

I think a November release will be cutting it pretty close to Christmas myself. If this forum is any indication, a lot of people may be taking a wait and see approach before jumping on that bandwagon.

To further muddy the waters, a lot of the new Windows 8 based machines are going to be hybrid forum factors completely new to the market.

Intel and Nvidia both seem to think they will be winners. Apple disagrees. What does the [H]ard Forum think? Will Windows 8 tablets and hybrids be hotter than a blazing Yule log this year or will they be what bad kids get in their stockings instead of a lump of coal?

This is the 2nd time this happens, the 1st time this happen, I do a re-boot, and I get back my win 7.

This time, I do a re-boot, same thing. So I press ctrl-alt-del, then somehow, my login icon shows up, and I have to click it and I login and then the win 7 music comes up and I got in.

Prior to press ctrl-alt-del, all I see, is my cursor and a black screen. Naturally, this is Not the way it is all these years.

Has this happen to any1 else?

Ever since I bought this Eee netbook, Windows Starter Edition has consistently refused to update to SP1. It will go through the motions then tell me the update has failed. Searched around the Intartubes but could not find anything that would help.

Going the other route and coughing up for a higher version of Windows is not an option. Starter does everything I need for what I expect of this system. I just want to get it updated.

Any ideas?

I was up all last night putting together my latest build, which has an Intel 520 series SSD as its one and only drive. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H (a UEFI-capable board) with a Core i5-3570K CPU. I left most of the BIOS settings at defaults for my Windows 7 64-bit install, except for putting the SATA controller in AHCI mode.

So I ended up with the SSD being formatted GPT. I don't remember Windows setup asking me whether I wanted to format the disk as GPT or MBR. Either it happened automagically, or I was tired and missed it.

At 120 GB, the SSD is not big enough to require GPT, so is there any particular advantage to sticking with a GPT-'ed SSD? As far as I know, the main selling points of GPT are:
-many more partitions
-access to very large (>2 TB) disks.

Often, I will get an error like this when trying to uninstall a program: http://puu.sh/uaCQ

When I attempt to manually delete such a file, Windows will tell me I "need permission from an administrator," even though I'm logged in as *the* administrator (net user administrator).

The only way to delete said files is to shift+delete, and wait around five minutes real-time for the file to finally delete. If I attempt to right-click --> properties on the file during the timeframe, I'll get a properties window that tells me the filesize is whatever the filesize is, but that the "Size on disk" is ridiculously small, like a few 100 bytes.

This doesn't just happen upon uninstall; often, I can't overwrite files or delete them even when no other program is using them. This occurs across all drives, not just my root SSD drive.

I'm running Windows 7 x64. Any ideas?

Every now and then, when I click on Power Options in the Control Panel, I get the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working." Explorer then restarts and sometimes I can re-click and things are fine, or it may fail two or three times in a row.

It may go weeks between occurrences, or happen every time for a couple of days--doesn't seem to be any pattern, and it doesn't seem to matter what the power state is.

System is Gigabyte GA-970-UD3, Phenom II 960T, 8 GB G.SKILL 1600 ram, 64GB OCZ Vertex SSD, and 500GB Hitachi HD, Radeon 4890, Seasonic Gold 560w, Windows 7 64-bit.

This problem never happens with anything else or with my other two Windows 7 installations. Anyone have any ideas?
