Just done a fresh install on my bloatware laden Acer Laptop, and it's running well.

I still hate metro, and the way it attempts to turn Windows 8 into Window 8, but they seem to have made it easier to change file associations to the desktop based equivalents.

The displaying of the text is very slow. When it starts to scroll you can see each line getting redrawn. I never had this problem on my old system which didn't use uefi.

Windows 7 boots up fine in normal mode and has no issues.

As I was about to install Windos XP Pro on my ASRock Motherboard 970DE3/U3S3, it could not detect any hard drives, therefore in the BIOS I changed the AHCI to IDE and went along with the install.

After the Windows XP drivers are installed, I decided to go back to the BIOS and change this setting back to AHCI. To my surprise, Windows XP does not boot and it loops back to the BIOS text and it repeats the process.

The Hard Drive that I use is 36GB Raptor (NCQ). Does running on IDE, somehow "degrades" the preformance of this drive and my Windows experience?

If I try to "save as" (file/save as), the file dialogue box doesn't open. The right-click menu in the browser also won't bring up the file dialogue box. Nothing I do will bring up this dialogue box. When I try, the edge to the window appears to flash, but nothing more happens. Everything else seems to work fine.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H (a UEFI-capable board) with a Core i5-3570K CPU. I left most of the BIOS settings at defaults for my Windows 7 64-bit install, except for putting the SATA controller in AHCI mode.

So I ended up with the SSD being formatted GPT. I don't remember Windows setup asking me whether I wanted to format the disk as GPT or MBR. Either it happened automagically, or I was tired and missed it.

At 120 GB, the SSD is not big enough to require GPT, so is there any particular advantage to sticking with a GPT-'ed SSD? As far as I know, the main selling points of GPT are:
-many more partitions

Explorer then restarts and sometimes I can re-click and things are fine, or it may fail two or three times in a row.

It may go weeks between occurrences, or happen every time for a couple of days--doesn't seem to be any pattern, and it doesn't seem to matter what the power state is.

System is Gigabyte GA-970-UD3, Phenom II 960T, 8 GB G.SKILL 1600 ram, 64GB OCZ Vertex SSD, and 500GB Hitachi HD, Radeon 4890, Seasonic Gold 560w, Windows 7 64-bit.
