Hey,
My promblem is that my dad wants to take his laptop on the road and have truly anywhere any time internet. i know this will proably not be fast internet but i was wondering what would be the best way to accomplish this? He has a nextel phones so i was wondering if it would be possible if i got a nextel enabled cell phone and got the bluetooth dongle if could connect to the internet that way??? If this is possible but not the best way what would be the best way to connect and truly be mobile???
Thanks

I have a Treo 650 with Sprint and use it with my Powerbook for anywhere internet. On Mac this is really clean cut and you don't have to use any additional software. However, the PC side of things seems to be a little less clean. For my Windows laptop I had to buy a utility called PdaNet which you should be able to find via Google.

Nextel does use different network technology than Sprint, and there is also the possiblity that DUN is disabled on your phone so YMMV.

I'm not sure what speeds you will get on the Nextel network, but with Sprint's CDMA I get bursts of 128k down. Most of the time it is more like 56k, but it works.

Nextel is not the best network to be on for wireless data (as far as speed), but it should still work. I need to find a solution like this as well, since I am going to be on call this Christmas. My parents were supposed to be getting DSL tomorrow, but now Qwest says they're out of capacity for at least a month on a POP that just got installed a week ago. GRR.

i likw thw simplicity of the verizon one, anyone uses that and know about how good the speeds are? ill check into that program and see what i havbe to do, From what i was told from the nextel people i can do the internet with the phone i have, i just have to run a usb to my phone and i could transfer data that way for like 45 a month.

I have bluesoleil, the software that came with my bluetooth dongle. And there are 13 icons on it (File transfer, HID, Headset, etc.) and one of them is the bluetooth dial-up service. Doesn't he just have to use that?

See if Verizon Sierra is available in the area he intends to cover. I've setup a lot of clients on it, they love it.

I second that. A friend of mine has Verizon's wireless high-speed internet and it comes with a PCMCIA card for your Lappy. It is quite speedy, enough so that he is not getting any other form of internet access at the moment. For ~$60/ month it's not all that bad, considering that my Cable company charges me $50/ month for their offering.

I have a Verizon card for work, plus I have installed it on over a dozen people's laptops at work. It works great. I can get usually around 384K, and once got up to 1Mb. It works really well, is pretty easy to use, just open the Access Manager, click connect and done. If you use VPN, start your VPN client, and you are off and running.

Hell, I was bored one night and tried to play City of Heroes on it, and it worked fine for that. So far my people haven't found a place where it hasn't been available. $60 per month, just means you need to be on the road at least 7 days where you would have paid for Internet access to make it pay off.

Otherwise if it is going to be less than that, you can always just pay the extra $10 per hotel room night if you make sure you stay in hotels with high Speed Internet.
