I am little bit of a networking noob so bear with me. I have 2 desktops and a laptop that I want to all network together to share some files here and there, but I am having issues. Right now I am just trying to setup the desktops. One has to be wired and the other wireless because of placement issues. I can access the internet on both computers fine, but I can't access one computer from another. I have run network setup and both comps are on the same workgroup name. I can even ping each comp from the other. I do not know what to do. Do I need an access point or something??

Oh, and I have a Belkin Pre-N Wireless Router, and the files I want to share have been shared on each computer.

Thanks

Well, that's bizarre. Check "My Network Places" to see if your computer is actually able to access the shares of the other comp. alternatively, you could use "nbtstat -A <ipaddress>" in a command line to see what shares the computer is broadcasting (<ipaddress> being the ip address of the computer with the shares, leave out the <>'s). Taht is, of course, assuming you're using windows.

Make sure you followed the instructions on the network setup wizard to the letter, as windows is shitty retarded and has networking problems if it doesn't get it's way.

First question that needs to be answered: What OS?

OS is windows...sorry.

I did follow the network setup wizard to the letter during setup, and after that didn't work I tried doing it manually with the pcstats guide to networking but still out of luck. Pcstats said that you could access other computers on your network by going to start>run and typing \\"computername" but that comes back with a network path not found on each computer when I try it.

When I get home I will try the suggestion up above. Thanks

I'm assuming you are using windows XP. I find that turning off simple file sharing fixes a lot of problems, however, this does not work for XP Home, that option is automatically enabled and cannot be disabled as far as I know. For XP Pro, if you want to try this, open any folder. Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > near the bottom uncheck "use simple file sharing" and click apply. Hope that helps.

If you're using XP SP2, be sure to turn off the integrated firewall. It can be found in the control panel.
