AVI stutters constantly.

I'm trying to watch this movie that is xvix AVI. I just installed the mega k-lite codec because I though that was the problem. This movie I'd say every 20 seconds pauses and then continues. It's annoying. It's reading from the harddrive so I can't figure out why it's doing it. Any ideas? I have a 2.8gig Cely, 512ram, FX5200 128mb, Maxtor 120gb 7200, I just don't get it.

Some questions:


How large is the file you are attempting to play?
What is your current memory usage?
What other programs are running while you try to play the video?


Just from what you said, I'd recommend bumping the memory up to at least 1GB. It should work fine with 512, but depending on what else is running and how large the video is, you could run into problems.

are your drives running in DMA or PIO mode?
are your motherboard chipset drivers up to date?
have you tried using other media players (ex: winamp, divx player, etc.)?
are your graphics card drivers up to date?

Use FFDSHOW. It is the fastest mpeg4 Direct Show codec available.
