View Full Version : Cant get windows to see my new Hard Drive

I got a new 200 gb IDE 133 maxtor drive recently and upon installing my computer wont reconize it. I dont get it because i already have a 200gb sata that i use for windows and i had a 80 gb back up. Why wont windows see this drive.
I have win xp sp 2

did you use the software that came with the harddrive to install it

First, does the bios recognize it, if yes Follow the directions in my sig, if you can't see my sig let me know.
If no, check that the drive is set as the appropriate master/slave jumper, I recommend against cable select as it can cause 'issues," and that the drive is also on the right spot on the cable, end for master, middle for slave. Then after that, follow directions in sig because the drive will not magically show up without a format and drive letter designation.

Thanks defakto that did it ive never had a hard drive that did not just appear but then ive never added a drive outside of a clean install

This comes up alot more than you'd expect.
