ok, I'm not sure if this goes here or hardware so feel free to move it.

Last week my computer started to shutdown windows when I was Firefox after about 5 min. IE was fine. Then it got to where it would load windows then turn off.

I decieded to go out and get a new harddrive and just do a freshinstall since I needed a new drive anyway it was no big deal.

Well, I got a fresh install going lastnight and first thing I did was goto update the OS. While downloading the updates windows shutsdown.

The computer will stayt on but widows will just sort of turn itself off and not come back up.

I am running:

WinXP Pro (not updated fully since win. keeps turning off)
1 gig pc 2100 (512,256,256)
currently one harddrive (60 gig Maxtor)

Does the computer shut off instantly or does it say "Windows is shutting down"? If it's the first case then you have a hardware problem. Try another power supply to see if that will fix the problem. It also might be that the CPU is not being cooled and is shutting the computer off since it can't be cooled off. But I would check the power supply first.

Does it go through an OS shutdown process or is the shutdown akin to pulling the plug?

weird... are you sure its not entering a power save mode?

are there any activity lights showing access? (network or HD)

if not z-lite is right on.. "replace the power supply"

ok, after dicking with it for 2 days I went out and got a new board/cpu combo from Frys.

While pulling the old board out and disconecting the power supply I noticed that the connection was blackend on 3 pins. I am gonna says it was toasted and go on with my new board and cpu.
