My gf's computer has just started a strange problem. I haven't played around with it too much yet, but I wanted to see if anybody has heard of this problem.

It has XP Professional I beleive...

Lately it has started hanging on bootup leaving just the background with no icons, and then after a few minutes it says my pictures slideshow.scr has crashed with the error report. Then it does nothing, so I goto the task manager and run explorer, I think everything is OK, then explorer crashes and reloads in a non-stop cycle. The only thing to do is a hard-reboot or turn it off.

It has the latest defintions of AVG, and the times where it booted fine I did a full scan with 0 viruses. I've ran spybot with the only problems coming up being Mywebsearch, fulltangent, and some other search. Adaware just has cookies coming up.

Format is last resort as she has precious mp3's and pictures...

See if you can do a repair install which will repair the Windows files and not erase/overwrite anything.

You should be using a second harddrive for storage."Always".

How big is your harddrive ?
If it's big enough you could split it into two partitions and use one for storage.

As for the explorer.exe error. Run some registry fixing programs, but I'm not sure of any free ones since i use ones that are supposed to cost money. :D

If that don't work, you could try replacing it using recovery console. If that don't work you should backup your shit and reformat your harddrive into two partitions and use one for storage. Or buy a secondary harddrive.

I'll try the registry fix then the recovery CD (I don't know if her Dell has one, it might be in a hidden partition)...as I said I haven't had much time. I'll move her personal stuff over to the 2nd harddrive and then play around in case it goes from broke to worse.

Thanks guys

Explorer errors can be such a bitch to TS, too many 3rd party apps screw around with it...

My SOP is to run a reg fixer, repair install, format/re-image.
