I've heard a bad thing or two about the chipset cooler on the DFI LP boards, and I was a bit curious if anyone could recommend an alternative cooler to install. Thanks.

The nF4 SLI chipset looks like it is well placed this time, perfectly between the two PCI-E x16 slots. This gives you a lot of room to play with. You can probably get away with the Zalman NB47J heatsinks again, all the way up to the Swiftech MCX-159Cu.

The Swiftech MCX159-CU looks pretty nice... a bit costly for a little chipset sink, but heh.

You obviously have something louder than that little contraption of a heatsink.

Buy the copper + aluminium swfitech chipset cooler. The new all copper one is so poorly made its a joke, the old one has helioid pins and shite, funky stuff.
You could just get the nv47j or whatever from Zalman and mount a silenX fan on it or somethin, would cool just fine but the swiftech is pretty much the best youll get bar water coolin.

Just use smart guardian to turn the fan down...
with the fan off... my chipset runs @ 60c doesnt seem to mind it at all.

Having a few issues actually finding the old one anywhere in the US, heh. Anyone know who has some in sock?

in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the new unit. the pins don't need to be grooved because copper construction allows for better use of the full length of each pin.
on the old aluminium pins, there needed to be lots of surface ares per unit length. only the bottom most area of each pin actually got hot under normal opperating conditions, so the heatsink needed the added surface area to cool effectively.
now, since swiftech went to the all copper version to simplify machining, so that they could farm out production to a facility overseas, that might mean that QC has gotten worse......

That's becoming a very familiar verse.

That's becoming a very familiar verse.well, it tends to happen when companies shift production in an effort to reduce costs.
it's not just US firms moving overseas, but moving production anywhere else with the stated goal of reducing costs can have this affect.
in the auto insdustry: nissan moved prodction of the altima and maxima to US plants, to save on shipping, duties, etc, and quality has never been the same. quality also took a dive on the cars that toyota has shifted to the nearby plant up here in canada. corola being the best/worst example in my own mind.
it isn't just about the workers, but the decisions management makes and the policies that they set make a difference, and if they are opperating with cost cutting in mind, that can result in the manufacture of an inferior product.

Heh yeah I guess I didn't expect them to need to "cut costs" on a dollar worth of aluminum and copper that they sell for $40.
