Well, just installed xp 64 bit and wanted to change the color of my green start menu and followed a guide to stylesXP. After installing it, the thing asked me to try out a style to make sure everything worked. After changing to some apple like style, I didnt see an option to change it back so I just closed the program hoping for a prompt that would restore my original settings. It never did, so I reopened the program and it then gave me a registration dialog like the trial was over. Uninstalling stylesXP restored the default windows scheme, reinstalling leaves me at the registration menu, so I just gave up with that.

I then tried using resource hacker on my explorer.exe from my old win2k install on another harddrive, nothing showed up so I assume that resource hacker doesnt support changing 64 bit executable's resource blocks, so I just closed the application.

After I rebooting back into winxp 64, I noticed that my internet explorer icon has changed to a folder with a stopwatch on it. Also windows media player in the start menu has the default windows application icon, I havent noticed anything else yet. I tried using TweakUI's icon restore feature to see if that would work, but it didnt. I then logged into another account to see if it was a user setting or something affecting all users, the icon was affecting all users.

I really dont want to have to reinstall everything just for a couple of icons, anyone know of a quick fix for this? Im hoping that this is related to TweakUI and not something resource hacker did to the resources in explorer.exe.

And while im on the subject whats the easiest way to change the color of that darn green start button? Im hoping for an rgb entry someplace instead of having to create a bmp of the whole button.

Edit: Media player was just using the wrong program files path for it's icon. Internet Explorer is still hosed though, something I did with TweakUI could of possibly caused the change as well.

If the Repair Icon feature of TweakUI doesn't work, you might try Icon Packager:
http://files.filefront.com/iconpackager+publicexe/;4058029;/fileinfo.html

I used it a while back to fix some icons that had been corrupted by TweakUI. I forget exactly how it worked... but it did. Might be worth a try...if it runs in 64 bit. I've been running XP 64 bit for the past month and most everything seems to work, but ya never know.

That's swell. So what worked... Repair Icons or Icon Packager?

Maybe I shoulda just made a general help me fix random things as I upgrade from windows 2000 thread. But I'll try to keep it in here for now.

I cant seem to find any way to change the default window size behavior in winxp64. In windows 2000, windows are sized dynamically by how many items are in a folder. Right now in xp64 everything is maximized by default, it rememebers the folders I've opened, but for anything that isnt in the database it starts maximized. I've used the old "like current folder" but it does nothing with regard to window size.

Prime95 is rock solid on my win2k install, winxp64 is giving me an odd warning: illegal sumout. It's probably some random driver, but I thought I would throw it out there to see what everyone thinks.

Thats it for now, thanks in advance. =)

Edit: Reformatted because of that darn stylesxp, fixed the maximized window (all open at a default size, not dynamic like win2k) and the prime95 errors. I'll live with my green start button if it changing it means installing something so obtrusive.
