Recently CNN reported that Sony's CEO was going to take a loss on the PS3 and sell it for $300-$400. The idea was that they would be "giving" everyone a Blu-ray player in an attempt to create a format war with HD DVD.

CNN then retracted those statements saying that they never came from the CEO. I'm not sure if CNN made it up or if they are trying to cover something up - but do you think that this would be a good strategy for Sony?

Every console is sold at a loss on release. And production costs shouldn't be that much once the technology matures.

Sony says there won't be a rootkit - Hopefully they have learned their lesson.

New consoles are often sold at a loss- this is true. But this would be a huge loss. Blu-ray players alone are expected to cost nearly $1000.

The thing is that they could make Blu-ray the new DVD standard which would make them a huge profit in the long run.

i dont see why SONY wont succeed with this, cuz by the time PS3 bows in, the novelty of the 360 wears off, and ppl are gearing up for another next gen launch (not to mention those who can splurge on it, and those who are die hard sony !!!!!!!). besides, one market that i kno the 360 cant take over the PS3, and that is japan

You hit the nail on the head. If Blu-Ray does gain wide acceptance and becomes the "official" next-generation optical media (unlike Betamax, MiniDisc, MemoryStick, etc.), It will probably pay off all of the PS3 losses and then some.

if 360 had the crazy asian dev support sony has, sure theyd dominate, but i like the fact that those japanese games ARENT on my system, why would i want FF13 over TES4? why would i take GT5 over forza, because it has 3429372versions of some car ive never heard of and makes me get licenses which is annoying as hell. ill take splinter cell over MGS4, but really neither appeal to me that much

and i hope blue ray dies forever, sony doesnt deserve to make money off of something there forceing down consumers throats when %2 have hd tvs anyway

Whatever console gets odd, Japanese RPGs gets my vote. Somehow, I don't think this is going to be the 360. I hope they sell for a competative price, and that Blu-Ray isn't a crippled format, laden with DRM.

Becuase you can get TES4 on your PC. FF has a huge fan base, and !!!!!!s. The GT games are simulation and do have an "arcade" mode that I'd tak over forza any day. 25-8562924 verisons of some car you never heard of? Over 90% of those cars I have heard and getting a license to race is kinda normal for this type of racing. You can get splinter cell for your pc.

BTW Blue-ray is gonna die, blu-ray is coming and it's only matter of time for it become standard and umm.... Try at least half of us have an HD-TV now what generation it is is a different story and you computer is a HD-TV once you get a tuner for it. Sony isnt forcing anything down you throats, they are trying to push a really good format that has a huge stoage space. And no HD-DVD's will no reach the same sizes as the blue-ray disk.

How to word this. Out of my local family... Only 2 of the families do not have HD TV's. One can't afford it currently and the other even if they could, they prob wouldn't have one. I live in DFW, So I guess my view on who has HD-TV is skewed snice most poeple I know have a tv from 2000 or newer. Also reason poeple don't have HD is not the cost of them was high at one time. Also TV's tend to last long time and poeple don't go out and buy the latest greatest. My brother is HUGE eletronics fan as am I, and he usually has the nice TV's and stuff. If he had the cash, he would of had an HD-TV 2 years ago. He just now got his stuff fixed and has ordered a CRT rear projection tv(ugh gonna be nice to watch movies again on a big tv).BTW CRT Rear projection TV's may be bigger, but the technology is so mature and advanced, I'd put up with the size issues verus a sub par fuzzy looking lcd/dlp/plasma. Yes I have gone in stores seen them set up correctly etc etc. And the CRT Rear Projections always have sharp, crystal, clear pictures. I myself have been waiting for technology imporvements and a reason to buy an HD-TV to come and it has. PC's being able to play at decent resolutions now and next gen consoles. Eventually EVERYONE will have an HD and 5 years from now, expect 50%+ to have HD if not more then this.

Less, it's around 14% last time I checked, just a couple of weeks ago.

It'd be funny if the whole HD strategy backfired on MS and Sony and Nintendo took over. Their Revolution just seems more *Next Gen* to me, anyway. PS3 and 360 are cool, and I'm sure they'll have a lot of good games, and I'm sure I'll own both, eventually...but Revolution is really the one I'm *excited* about.

I find myself watching enough TV as it is (2-3 hours after work). If I had a nice HD plasma TV and a good sound system I might not ever leave the family room. I really shouldn't buy a Xbox360 or PS3.

HD market penetration sits at less than 15%, and a 3-layer HD-DVD has approx the same capacity as the much-touted BluRay.

Actually the market is smaller but they sell a hell of a lot there. Bottom line, though, is that without Japanese developer support, I know I get turned off from buying the system, as many do. It's not hard to see that despite the fact that I don't like their cars, the Japanese are often the most creative and interesting developers, and their games show it. This is why MS was so worried about getting support in Japan, and it doesn't look so good for them on the consumer side.

Sony would be smart to sell it at a huge loss cause no matter the loss, winning the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war will far outweight the losses.

yet, they control the industry.
a console's success relies on japanese support

That's true, but the question is: Can they afford to? Sony hasn't been doing well for a long while now. In the last *year* their market value has declined by 20%, and their profits are *tiny* (70 million off of 1.85 BILLION in sales. Contrast that to Microsoft, with 3 BILL in *profit* off just 9 Billion in sales. MS, on the percentages, makes about 20 times what Sony has been. PS3 may just *kill* Sony.)

while i agree that sony hasn't been doing well, i think it would take more than just the ps3 for sony to fall. sony is still a big brand name.
