A month ago, I installed a new WD 160gb S-ATA2 (OEM) drive to use as a system/storage drive. I had a hard time partitionning it 60/100 (with Partition Magic 4, both NTFS), it would freeze or jam for some/much time before moving on. I changed partition sizes to 50/110 and it seemed ok. Installed Windows 2000 on smaller part. I then proceeded to move/download stuff to the 2nd partition.

Last week when downloading, I got an "erroneous file" error. Thought nothing of it . But then some more over the week as the HD was filling. When I tried to move out data from this part to format it, I had some CRC errors and one or two "inpage sumthing" errors. Plus, moving files could take an eternity. The "time left" counter can go from 140 minutes to 2, and back to 160 minutes. That's for about 500mb of data. If I tried to access a file or start an app from the primary partition, it would take very looooong to open. I finally got the files out of the storage partition, formatted it all to NTFS, moved everything back in. Same kinds of error again.

I used "chckdsk /f /r", it found some corrupted files, fixed them (on some 300kb file, it took at least 20 minutes, I went to eat after that!), but same trouble came again.

I used WD's drive utility, it found 2 errors:
-Re-allocated sector count
-Multi zone error rate
Whatever that means. (last minute edit: just Googled it, yikes. Worse than I expected.)

Now, is there anything I could try to "fix" it, or find what's wrong before I RMA it?

Oh, reason I got an S-ATA2 is because I wanted something around 120/160gb, and it was the only thing the store had in stock within my size/price range.

Sure hope I wont have to go through reinstalling Windows *again*. Worse, having to wait for a new drive (shop tech said they have to test my drive before giving/ordering me a new one).
