Today, I installed the latest Microsoft patches onto my home PC and when I restarted, as Windows was loading, I could hear a sound of something turning off in my computer and it restarted. For most of the next 8 times that I tried, it would start loading Windows XP and that blue bar would keep moving left to right, pausing occasionly for several seconds (which I've never seen before). After 5 minutes, Windows still wouldn't be loaded and it would restart. Sometimes it would restart sooner.
After trying this for a while, it got to the point where Windows wouldn't even start to load before my computer crashed. I got a couple of errors saying that there was a disk error. I know that the rest of my computer is OK because it booted up on an old 8GB drive that I had around. (7 years old and still works!)
Basically, I'm wondering if it is normal for a drive to fail like this. I've had the drive on for most of the 2+ years that I've owned it. That means that it's been on for about 1 million minutes and it suddenly fails in the 1 minute after a Microsoft update. Coincidence?
My computer had been crashing a lot in some games, but I don't know if it is related.
I'll be replacing this one with a drive having about a 200GB tomorrow.

well, when my 250 started dieing, it really wasnt noticable until windows just started to slow down... transfering files started taking longer, and the more i waited, the longer it took to transfer... after about a month, it was just done, and i sent it in... bye bye MP3's, lol

now i just have to remember to buy a new one... relying on a 80gb maxtor isnt gonna cut it. :(
