Got this drive from a Toshiba/TIVO SD-H400 DVD player/DVR unit on
eBay. Never got the DVR part to work right (bad logic board) but I was able to salvage this drive and a few other parts. Over the past month or so it's been
acting up on me. Every so often after a reboot the drive will not show
up a a drive letter in Windows XP Home. Under Computer Managament, the drive
will show as 3.xGB (it's actually an 80GB drive), but it looks normal in
Device Manager. Rebooting almost always fixes the problem, maybe 1 time out of 10 it doesn't. The BIOS seems to always detect the drive correctly.

Of course I no longer have any critical data on the drive, and what I have left on it I've backed up. Any ideas on what could be wrong, and what I could try?
This drive is set up on the primary IDE channel (it's a PATA/133 drive) as a slave drive. Formatted NTFS, I think under TIVO it had EXT3 formattting (not sure about that). The drive worked perfectly for 2-3 months before this started happening.

I have 3 other IDE devices connected, on the primary channel master is a 20GB PATA/100 drive, on the other channel is a CD-RW drive set to slave and a DVD writer set to master. The other devices have not given me any problems.

Try a cheap fix - a different interface cable.
