Long story, short version:

I had a short in some of my wiring, my HD sparked and smoked and no longer works. One of the chips on the logic board is fried (visably melted & burned). I have another identical maxtor drive, can I just swap logic boards to retrieve my data? Or is there another board somewhere else in the drive that might be fried (like a power board)?

Drive revisions have to match exactly, if I recall correctly, it's possible something else could be fried though, it's always a possibility. Only one true way to find out.

The chance of blowing the other logic board is making me really nervous. Anyone else ever try this?

I have done it on two of my Maxtor sata drives which were shorted out. Worked perfectly fine for me, just make sure the logic boards are exactly the same.

Buddy of mine did a PCB swap on a Seagate 7200.7 when his USB enclosure blew up. It was a success, he got his data off the drive and Seagate went through with the RMA.
