Which is better?
It is advisable to get hitachi 160GB satat2 or mator 200GB as it is cheaper than seagate.

Maxtor 200GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA (3 Yrs) $155
Hitachi T7k250 160GB SATA II (3 Yrs) $141
Seagate 160GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA (5 Yrs).. $158

Define "Better"

If you want the best performer, you will NEED to tell us if you mean a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 or Maxline III series or a Diamondmax 9 or Maxline 2 series.

If its a DM10/ML3 vs Hitachi vs Seagate and you want raw performance, get the DM10/ML3 drive. If you want the quieter drive, get the seagate. If you want a mixture of performance, acoustics, heat output, get the Hitachi.

If you speak of older DM9/ML2 drives, forget them, get a Seagate or Hitachi. Doesn't matter which brand, just pick one or the other.

If I were buying a HDD right now, I'd have to say it, I've changed my tune, I would buy a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 series or Maxline III series for the performance factor. If the Hitachi's were significantly (~$20) cheaper, I'd go with them or a Seagate. I love Seagate and Hitachi, but those ML3/DM10's have changed my outlook on Maxtor.

ed: are these Non-United States Dollar figures? If you are purchasing them for use outside the US, I'd make darn sure that the warranty carries over the US border.

I just got a 160GB Hitachi Deskstar Sata2 HDD and I think it's great. Whole system seems much "peppier" with the increased bandwidth going from IDE. Whisper quiet as well.

I would (and did) get the new Seagate 7200.9 series 160GB drive. Why? Because it features only ONE 160GB platter.

DiamondMax10 = T7K250 > Barracuda > DiamondMax9

DM10 has a huge 16MB buffer, but the T7K250 has higher dnesity and better seek performance, so they pretty well balance out. Seagate trails those two leader somewhat, and Maxtor's much older DM+9 should be avoided. Can you get WD2500KS in your region (I'm guessing Australia or New Zealand)

Seagate 160GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA (5 Yrs).. $158Not sure where you are shopping, but 141 bucks is kind of a rip off for that Hitachi 160 GB drive. You can get the 250 GB version for only $114 currently at Zipzoomfly.com. I paid 106 each for 2 of these last week from ZZF.

Newegg also has the Hitachi for 106 right now:
