i am haveing a problem with my computer rebooting or just shutting off.

not sure if this is the right forum but i am going to start here. i am having a problem with my computer reboot in the middle of my doing something. mostly when i am on the internet. but it has happened in many other prgrams also.

i also have the problem of the screen going blankand the moitor light changes from green to orange saying there is no signel. the lights are still on the computer, but i can't do anything. i hit the reset button and it boots up and sometime when i get to the windows desktop it will go blank again and i have to reboot..

sometime i can get on the computer and it works fine for a day or two then i have the problem again. right now it wont boot. it gets to the desctop and the screen goes blank.

it has been doing this for about a month now.

any idea on what it could be. if you need any more info let me what and i will let you know.

my computer specs

Windows XP Home SP2
Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2 bios is up to date
AMD Athlon 3000 Barton core.
1 gb OCZ plat memory
ATI Radeon 9800pro drivers up to date bought in may 2005

Perhaps it could be the powersupply.

Also disable restart system on system Failure.
That option is located in control panel/system/advance/startup and recovery/settings

Now when an error occurs windows won't reboot,it would probably throw up a blue screen when the error occurs. The blue screen should get you some info regarding what maybe causing the problem. You should write that error down and look it up on google or post it here.

I got a blue screen and it was unreadable. the screen had large blue and black block on it. also if i go into safe mode the screen is blocky and when i move the mouse it leaves streaks where ever it goes.

Definitely a hardware issue. Try reseating your video card or look around to see/smell any burned spots on the motherboard.

I am getting this error sometimes when i boot up. MS Error (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293078) Does this mean my Video card is bad.

you installed the latest drivers but did you try the work around they suggested?

As the website says
This issue may occur if the display driver is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This issue typically indicates a problem with the video hardware or that the display driver cannot program the hardware correctly.

Try a different video card and see if that fixes the problem.

I tried the setting that MS said. first i had to make the changes in safe more because everytime i hit the advanced button under display setting i got a blue screen that said i should reinstall my drivers or replace my video adapter. i do not have another card i can put in and try without buying a new one.

I have reinstalled my video drivers with the latest from ATI. and that did not help. my video card is only 5 month old. can it be a problem with my motherboard.

It can be everything, but the most likely problem is the video card. See if you can buy a cheap replacement to see if it works and if it does, it's your video card. If not, it's your motherboard.

Assuming the card is under warranty, go with an ATI card while the defective card is replaced so that you don't have problems with drivers.
