Hey, obviously 99% of the OS market is made up of Windows, MacOS, and the multitude of *nix distros on the market. But, what else is there that is current?

I ran BeOS for a year or so, until it pretty much died, and I loved it during that time, but from what I Can find lately, no seriously development has been done in that time. Are there any other alternatives? (I'm mainly just looking for something new to play around with).

Nothing. Apple uses the BSD kernel as its core for Mac OS X, Windows does its own thing and Linux/Unix have their developers.

Well there is reactOS, Haiku (former openBeOS), AmigaOS, Plan 9, AtheOS (which has become Syllable) and a small favorite of mine: Menuet.

It's fun to tinker :)

Come on, real men roll up their sleeves and write their own. :p

Pretty much nothing. Even solaris and IRIX could be lumped in with *nix

There's always GeekOS - the teaching tool used in the Operating Systems class I took last semester. Bare-bare bones kernel, runs in Bochs. But then we got to add virtual memory, a scheduler, filesystem, etc. - so it wasn't so bare bones anymore.

There are a few other OSes (listed above, such as BeOS, Amiga, OS/2), but they're very very rare and outside of a few people using legacy hardware or else specialized operating systems for embedded devices, there really isn't much other than the "standard three" of Windows, UNIX, and pre-X MacOS.

All you need is *nix anyway

But if you want something crazy to play with on old/strange/whacky hardware, why not give contiki (http://www.sics.se/~adam/contiki/) a shot? It'll even run on a commodore 64! I'm going to try it out on a Tandy 1000 I have sitting around here before I put minix on it for good.

QNX is unixish, but kind of different. There's a free install ISO available ... somewhere.
OS/2 lives on as eComstation, there's a live CD you can download. (Check osnews, it's on the frontpage.)
OpenVMS is unlike anything else, but you'll need a VAX, an alpha or an itanium to run it, and to get it you'll have to register as a DECUS member (free) and get the CD mailed to you (reasonably cheap ).
IBM has a few, though I'm not sure which ones are related how. z/OS and MVS, at least, are unlike anything else. However, you will not get your hands on the hardware to run them unless you get really lucky on eBay, and the same goes for the OSes.

Jesux:

Jesux will aim to be an environment that is pleasant for Christians to work in, with all the amenities a Christian might expect, and when possible, free from worldly influences.

No Internet then :(

I really kind of like Menuet. It is programmed in assembly and small enough to fit on a floppy! Good luck with drivers and applications for it though...

You can also have it boot using a RAMdisk so that you don't have to overwrite anything on your hdd.
