Is it necessary to reinstall windows XP when changing motherboards? I'm not changing the processor, they're both 478 pentium 4 boards. Should I be able to just swap the boards and boot the same XP installation from the same hard drive without causing any problems?

I'm really starting to think no one reads the stickies:

Would it be possible to have this one brought back out to the main OS forum page?

If the chipset is the same then you should be able to just swap and go.. if not you can read this thread (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=772307) from the sticky..

The way the sticky shows is best.
But I'll tell you what happened to me about a month ago. I got up one morning and my computer was off. After troubleshooting I found the CPU had died. It was a P4 1.8 willie core 400 FSB in a Abit TH7 non-raid board.
I ordered a P4 3.0 800 FSB to go into a Abit IS7-V2 board I had laying around here. I droped my SCSI card into the new computer. It booted into windows and it found all the new hardware. I called MS and got a new number and have been running it for a month with no lockups or BSOD's or anything.
XP is a lot more forgiving than the other MS OS's.
BTW I was ready to do a full reload if it acted up at all. :D
