I recently upgraded from an Athlon 64 3000+ to an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and Windows didn't recognize that my processor actually has two cores. After trying to change a whole bunch of stuff, it still didn't work. ANYWAYS I decided to reinstall Windows (naturally). When I booted the machine from the Windows XP CD, I hit 'Enter' to install Windows, then selected my Windows installation and hit 'R' to repair the installation. During the installation, I got a lot of errors saying it can't copy certain files. When I hit 'Browse...', I can see the file it needs to copy on the CD, but it just won't do it. I end up cancelling the copy of about 50 files I'd say, and some of them say that Windows might not work right without them. They were right, Windows doesn't work without them, I get BSOD every time I try to start Windows. I've tried two different Windows discs (one wasn't scratched at all), two different CD-ROM drives, and two different IDE cables...no luck whatsoever. Has anyone run into this before? If so, any ideas?

1) Is the BIOS of your motherboard updated to handle that processor?
2) You said you were going to re-install XP, but then only tried a repair install. Back up your data and do a fresh install.

You may want to review this from the sticky

How to: Upgrade your motherboard without reinstalling Windows (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=772307)

Either way I'd imagine that if you get into windows you'll need the new chipset drivers anyways..

and I'd recommend a fresh load anyways

Are you overclocking your system? Are your ram settings “tweaked”? When it’s not the CD and it’s not the CD drive. It is often a system stability issue causing it to not be able to properly copy over the files.
