Hi all,

I just installed WinXP Pro (SP2) fresh. I am the only user on this machine (Administrator). When I installed, I left the password space blank, so that it logs in automatically, and I'm not prompted for a password (even a blank one).

Then I installed .NET.

Now, it prompts for a password every at startup, and so i have to press Enter to get into Windows. I also have a "Guest" acount in User Accounts, which i cant seem to delete.

How do i make it so that the Administrator account (me) logs in automatically at startup again, so that i dont have to press enter?

LOL!! I had the same exact thing happen to me.. I had to install NET to be able to use Catalyst from ATI. Suddenly I was looking at log-in every time. I was advised to make Logon an unattended process by use of the options for 'userpasswords2' to clear the problem.. but instead of placing me into the default login automatically (under the name I used for install), it placed me as litteral administrator. The login/logout screens are different now, and using ALT-CTRL-DEL to deactivate unwanted processes, as well as simply logging off have changed drastically. It was VERY hard to get used to. It just looks... funky... and extra steps are needed to do things that used to be a simple 1 click away

In doing it I had to reassociate my programs, in some cases reactivating them under the whole 'first time' conditions.

If NOONE will help you.. and you are desperate as a last resort.. try this.. but I urge you not to.. If I could put it back to pre-NET style logging in I would.. but I don't know how and I miss it

(sigh...) here we go:

To make logon an unattended process:

Click [Start] [Run] and type
control userpasswords2
Click [OK]
The [User Accounts] Property Sheet displays.
On [Users] tab, clear the [Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer] check box.
Click [Apply].
Enter a user name and password that should be used to logon automatically in the dialog box that appears.
Click [OK].
Go to [Control Panel] [User Accounts] [Change the Way Users Log On and Off].
Uncheck [Use the Welcome Screen] and [Use Fast User Switching]

yup...it's true. just go to microsoft's website and search for powertoys. Find TweakUI from the list, d/l and install. Once you install and open it, fo to the logon tab and just check the box for autologon and chose the account. If the account has a blank password, leave it blank and you're done.

prolly the same number of steps to do the same thing, just more "user friendly" I guess.

and that asp.net account sucks ass. if you get rid of it, half your .Net stuff won't work anymore (like the dumb ATI catalyst control center)

....or you could just switch off the guest account in control panel. Then it'lll go back to how it was before.

No downloads, no auto-login scripts, just a simple mouse click.

I'm an Engineer though... what's the point if it doesn't involve GUTTING something and rebuilding it from the ground up?

doesn't work if the ASP.NET account is still there and active. I had to setup the autologon feature on my HTPC because of that.
