View Full Version : creating slipstream, and other Windows cd annoyances

After re-installing XP and then having to apply SP2, and all the time involved, i made a Slipstream version to automate the process should (fingers crossed) i have to do it all again.

my question is how do I do the same for my Win2k Advanced Server, and make it so i do not have to f6 and have the floppy for SCSI and those IDE Controller treated as SCSI during install with Win2k. i want the SCSI and/or IDE controllers on the CD so i do not have to have a floppy drive at all.

how is this accomplished?

it is just a pain to have to have a floppy for one, and it seems that allowing only a FDD to provide the drivers is one of the dumbest things MS could have done. I may be late to this party, and in fact i am counting on this being a relatively well known issue that someone could help me out with.

thanks

nLite will do everything for you. Integrate drivers, hotfixes, servicepacks, make an unattended CD, optimize your CD, remove services, apply tweaks, everything.

That it does…thanks for the link.

I have one problem though my first try, I took Win2k Advanced Server, and my SP and Promise Ultra 100 drivers. Burned the ISO, and booted up in an old dual slot 1. then came the message, No Hard Drives detected.

I read the drivers being loaded (along the bottom of the install screen) but HDD not detected? Should the Text mode driver or PnP be used?

On another note, I made a WinXP w/SP2 and all drivers for my personal system, and the ability to create a unattended install with all drivers, CD-key and network settings is very nice indeed.

Now to figure out what I am doing wrong with my 2k.

Before the drives can be loaded and activated, you probably need to hit 'F6' I think to load the drivers manually (I think) since your using a controller card to access the Drives you're installing to.. yes?

I have to do the same thing with my SATA RAID for install... :(

I don't think this is something that can be overcome while using Nlite

You dont need to hit F6 if you integrate your controller drivers, however they MUST be integrated as Textmode.
It worked fine for my SATA raid (One HDD, but I couldnt get the computer to see the hdd until i enabled raid controller which for some reason allowed me to create a 0+1 stripe out of a single drive.

ok tried again, and the drivers are loaded, but no HDD detected. would having more than one drive on the Promise ultra be an issue?

the onboard IDE is disabled, and the onboard SCSI (AIC-7895 loads w/o issue). i have a HP SCSI 9200 CD-RW that i am loading the OS from, and my C: is a Maxtor 20g as single on IDE 0 on the Promise card with a Maxtor 80 (master) and WD40 as slave. so 3 IDE on the Promise, and one SCSI CD-RW onboard Adaptec SCSI controller.

I will dig up a FDD if i must, but i seem to remember that this board (Supermicro Super-P6DBS) FDD controller had issues, and one reason i have it now (in all probability).

on a side note: this PII450 x 2 768m PC100 and the afore mentioned drives /3Com 980B-TX- with Win2k Ad.server any performance tweaks for file serving?
