So I get around to reinstalling, I slip a disk in and reset and walk away only to find windows back up. I check and it seems it can't read my A drive and the light is always on disk or no. Tell me I've done something silly but non-fatal like slipped a cable in wrong and it isn't that my motherboard has some defect that makes it useless.

The floppy cable is in upside down. Turn it 180 degrees.

LOLZ i had the similar problem, its just the FDD cable is plugged incorrectly, just unplug it and turn it around and it should work fine.
