hey guys,

today i bought a Western Digital 200Gb 7200RPM 8mb HDD..I installed it, and put it on primary master (the only HDD on this comp.). I installed a fresh copy of windows XP Pro and it says that the capacity is 127Gb, and there is 125Gb free...!

I know you lose some to formatting, but this is crazy.

What happened to my other 75Gb ?!

It happens.. some boards don't accept large harddrives. I recommend reading the manual for the motherboard (http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/manual.php?categories=1&model=259), and also reading through the Microsoft knowledge base (http://support.microsoft.com/).

I believe there is a size limit either in your software or your hardware. Did you format in NTFS or FAT32?

Install XP Service Pack 1. It'll magically fix your problem.

Did you read the manual for your motherboard yet? Or look up this stuff on the microsoft knowledge base? I'm sure it's an easy fix.

Format the drive using the WD Data Lifeguard Tools.

or

Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc......right click and format the unused space

Make sure you format the whole drive as 200GB.

The format option is greyed out. At thhe bottom of the menu, there is a section called "partitioned space" with 127Gb and another section "unallocated" with 58.32Gb..It gives me the option to create a new partition un the unallocated space, but you said "format the whole thing as 200Gb", and i dont want to have two seperate partitions as ive never done that before

Ok, you must install your XP with SP1 already integrated. I could have sworn there is a sticky addressing this (and other) issue. Its the "ANSWERS" sticky. :)

Check that out for the answer to your solution. Randysway is correct, but would have worded it like "Install WinXP with SP1 integrated"

Unfortunately, people don't seem to have the ability to understand that a thread called "ANSWERS" that is stickied at the top of the forum may, well, you know, ACTUALLY HAVE THE ANSWERS TO THEIR QUESTIONS. Sorry, I'm just getting personally annoyed at seeing pretty much this same thread pop up nearly every week with pretty much the same question.

But, yes, you're either going to have to format that Unallocated space and accept having two partitions, or slipstream in XP SP1 or SP2 then reinstall Windows and the format in the Windows installer should show the full size.

Unfortunately, the sticky named "ANSWERS" didnt have ANY ANSWERS to my problems.
Anyway, i made a new partition and everything seems to be going good.

Thanks a lot guys for helping

Maybe if you took the time to *read* instead of browse or skim, you would have noticed the sections that detail the solutions to your exact problem.

Try using the diskpart command line tool.
