View Full Version : I need some way to lower the sound of my Raptor

I have a Lian Li V SILENT PC-V1100 Silver Computer Case (very nice) and the Raptor is still very noisy. Is there a way to dampen the sound of it? The Raptor is my “poor man’s” computer upgrade instead of a new processor and board and works as well as every one says it does.

Unplug the power cord. I find that this simple trick can reduce sound produced over 40%.

Seriously, look into isolating the hard drive (aka shock-mounting it). This will reduce the amount of vibration transferred to the case.

I second that.
Try these SilenX Hard Drive Grommets (http://www.silenxusa.com/productcart/pc/configureprd_z.asp?idcategory=17&idproduct=55) or check out some of the things these guys have done HDD vibration & noise reducing methods - ranked (http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=8240&sid=4d882f8f9bcf2b7181a07e9810c3129d)

Isolate the drives, as mentioned.

You can also line the inside sides/top/base(of your case, though this may already be done) with sound-dampening material.

As someone who has 2 raptors in his current rig, and 3 more sitting on the shelf, I can honestly say that people who want quiet computers should not be buying raptors. :-)

Throw a Tornado on your heat sink. That will eliminate all other noise. Thank God for fan speed controllers....

Thank you FreshPrinceOfBellAir for the links. It gave me an idea that works. The V1100 is already padded all around it with sound deadening material so I had to come up with a different solution. The V1100 has a metal plate over the 2 exhaust ports under the 2 HD racks. The lower HD in each rack mounts just off of the metal plate. I bought some 3M Velcro tape and cut it 1/3 its width and installed it (front of the case to the back of the case) on the left and right side of the vent cover plate. I then carefully moved in the HD into place. It works like a charm and it still allows the airflow under the HD and down into the vent. For those that do not know what the inside of my case looks like, here is a link to a review page that has a couple of pictures of the drive cage. Again, thank you all for the help because I would never want to get rid of my Raptor or the wonderful case. You have made life a little more enjoyable now.
