i just built an opteron 1.8 ghz box with a tyan (long model number but its the cheapest socket 940 board on newegg) and a tekram dc950 scsi controller with two 10k 18gb ibm scsi drives. the problem is randomly the drives start emitting a series of rapid beeps every 10 or so minutes that lasts for about 8 seconds. ive looked in the bios and the scsi bios and found nothing relating to alarms or beeping and im thinking about scrapping both drives in favor of a cheap sata controller/sata drive if i cant get these damn things to stop beeping randomly.

Is it the drives or the controller that beeps?

Are you sure the drives are healthy?
The only thing I can think of is that it is the drive doing some sort of recalibration or something like that because of read errors.

i actually pulled the drives out a few days ago because i just couldnt stand the random beeping, but the controller was silent sans the roaring 10k scsis
recalibration sounds about right... i noticed they didnt beep when i held them but they beeped (maybe something grinding?) during boot and random times during a gentoo installation
