View Full Version : Laptop for my sister

So my sister wants a laptop. I tried to convince her to go the tower route (so I could have some fun and build it), but she won't budge. My experience with laptops isn't much compared to regular desktops/towers. Basically I have looked through quite a few laptops for her that could meet her demands, but again there are people on this forum who have probably had much, much more experience with laptops then me. I asked her to write down her needs on a piece of paper and her budget. So here you go:

Budget: $700 (she can go over but she doesn't want to unless needed)

CRT like screen (believe it is called BrightView where the screen is much clearer)
Widescreen
Silver
DVD-Rom drive is a must

The laptop does not need have all these things, but the more the better. Another thing is that she does do a *little* gaming. My addiction to gaming has started to leak to family members and she occasionally plays some games. However since I realize $700 is pretty budget for a laptop. She doesn't care about high resolution or eye candy, just as long as she can play some of the newer games.

Depending on the recommendations I show her, we can hopefully work one out. All help is appreciated on this. :)

Mods I posted this twice since my thread applies to two forums. If it isn't ok just lock one.

For this budget you may not be able to go for something more than a Celeron based system.

How about something like this? (http://www.gateway.com/products/GConfig/proddetails.asp?system_id=m520x&seg=hm)

Is she willing to "budge" 300 dollars? If not..this is one step down. (http://www.gateway.com/products/GConfig/proddetails.asp?system_id=m360x&seg=hm)

I beg to differ...I've got a P4 2.8 northwood with 768 megs of ram (OriItginally 256MB) and a 30 gig hd for $669 after shipping...It's a dell inspiron 1150...It's used but for that price I'm def not complaining....Now I know a P-M would've been way better and smoked this computer....It's still great for a laptop...Seriously though check ebay...I know the members here are probably against that, but theres not any rebates to deal with and you basically set your own price....

How about Dell 700m after using one of those common Inspiron coupons?

look into laptops equipped with Celeron M's...

They are 1MB L2 chips that were the original Pentium M's, for considerably less than what is available now with more than half-decent performance

How about this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115195) (you may want to upgrade RAM). You'll still stay within the budget.

SiS Mirage 2, you're not going to play many games with that.
