Ok so basically my cousins b/f works at dell and he can get stuff from there really cheap, so im gonna get a laptop from him for college (9300). I was wondering if i was to just the 256mb ddr2 533mhz ram, if i could say, go on new egg, and buy 2x512mb ddr2 533mhz notebook ram and it would work in this notebook? The configuration is below, tell me if you guys think anything is out of line, or what else i could scrap to save some money and make something else more high end etc., i want the vid card tho, it has to stay.

I was able to upgrade my Dell 700m with RAM off of Newegg. If you're looking at replacing the 256MB with the 2x512MB, then you would most likely be fine.

yes, you can upgrade the cpu if you are comfortable dismantling your laptop. It doesn't void your warranty just by opening it but if you damage something then it probably would. There is also a trick where you can buy a 1.6 400 mhz FSB Pentium M and make it run at 2.13 ghz with a simple wire. For 150 on ebay you get basically a PM 2.13 and then you can sell the original 533 FSB Dothan for what you got the other processor for. It's what I did and I am very happy.

I have an inspiron 9300 with the 2.13 Ghz processor, the 6800 video, 1.25 GB Ram, 80 Gig HDD, etc for $1185 after the after market ram from newegg. (Get a 1 Gig stick for about $100 and then you can keep your 256 meg stick that came with it.) Hope that helps.

That's what I did, sort of. I bought my 9300 with a 1.6GHz and replaced it with a 1.5GHz Dothan (715A). It's a simple pin modification to force 533MHz FSB (2GHz). I made a thread here detailing the procedure: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=912387

I also bought 2 Transcend 512MB DDR2 SODIMMs (OOS, but comes back often): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208017 . These are a few dollars cheaper ($57.70 shipped 512MB DDR2-533 SODIMM): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820155133
