View Full Version : 19" LCD for gaming
My trusty Sony G400 finally died last week so I'm looking to replace it with a decent LCD. On my second computer I use a BenQ FP91E which I got very recently and which I am very happy with for browsing and work stuff, but it seems to be a tad slow for games (8ms grey to grey, but 25ms white to black).
Can anyone recommend a decent 19" LCD for gaming? I'd prefer not to spend more than $400 (since I'm in Europe where everything is more expensive to begin with :p).

Well I'm using a Samsung 912n and Its great. Even though it has a 25ms response time, I see no ghosting at all. I picked it up at bestbuy for about $375US.
No DVI inputs on the Samsung :(

Yeah, thats the only thing. Im fine with it though. Have you thought of a Dell maybe? I think they are stupidly expensive though.

I've heard that the Hyundai l90d+ is a really nice gaming panel... dvi and analog with the same panel as the samsung (i think?)

I just bought and Acer ALS1912. I paid 319, which was distrib cost. Its 8ms, and man is it pretty. Does have DVI and Analog. Colors are rich, no ghosting, really smooth.

Viewsonic VP191, VX924. Hyundai L90D+. Samsung 930b. Dell 1905FP. All fine choices, take a look at the Dell 20 inch widescreen 2005FPW too. :)

I bought a Samsung 930b 8ms , only problem is they dont come with a DVI cable. I love it and its great for gaming. 0 dead pixels. I liked it so much I bought a second . I run 1 on a DVI And the other on analog ( cant tell the diference. ) they are connected to my BFG 6800 GT. Got them at Comp USA for $349 each after rebates.
take a look at the Dell 20 inch widescreen 2005FPW too.
I did. Dell Germany wants €526.99 (about US$660) plus shipping, which is definitely out of my league.

How about the Sceptre X9g-Gamer? I have one right now and its very nice. Its got a 12 ms response time, 500:1 contrast, and DVI, VGA, S-Video, Composite, on and on. Its a really great monitor for around $350-$400 USD.

i also bought a 930b and it is fantastic, no ghosting, nice colors, just great for gaming.only cons about it is that the stand that comes with it doesnt allow you to adjust it in anyway. but that really isnt an issue for me or anyone else who has used my comp. oh and about the dvi cable, ive read on other forums that they are now shipping with dvi cables. and if ur not lucky enough to get one, just check buy.com i got my dvi cable for only 9 bucks

I've never heard of a hyundai monitor. Are they a reputable company? Also, will a dvi cable give you any quality difference from a vga cable? if so what are the differences.

For 19" panel, either the Viewsonic VP191 or Samsung 193P+. IMO, TN panels are really awful for color reproduction and viewing angles, hence my suggestions.

from my experience (in the last 6 month ive bought three - 2 19's and 1 17) I'd say yes. All items are packaged well with lots of extras and had no dead pixels on any of the lcd's. the imagequest l90d+ has been said by many to be one of the best if not the best gaming lcd made.

View sonic VP191b < definitely
just make sure you get the 8ms panel and you will not regret it, it is the best monitor regarding response time since it constantly remains under the 12ms limit and the black are deep man dunnow if you ever used an lcd but before it was really frustrating that *shiny* effect on blacks and apart from that color saturation ~ that’s what I call quality + considering the monitors ergonomics? It’s a must
just check its design though and see if it is of your liking but don't base your opinion on the pictures on the product site or any other sites features reviews of this monitor, I thought it was damn ugly but I got it regardless just for the panel and when I got it out of the panel its smooth and sleek man and it feels good maybe I should post some pics when possible
But really think about it according to tom's hardware guide it is even better then the Hyundai imagequest

Anyone know which direction the prices on the Hyundai L90D+ are headed? I know someone that wants to order one, but won't be actually building his system for a month or two. Should he buy it now or wait?

I'm guessing the prices might drop a little in the next month or two unless they decide to gouge the college students.

That is most likely a Gray to Gray (G2G) time. Check this out for an explanation:

g2g 4ms
typical 5ms!?!
Just done some digging - the 5ms typical would appear to be a 'White - Black - White' time. Generally the measurement is 'Black - White - Black'.
I've been looking at the comparison charts posted on Viewsonic’s site & the monitor next along using the BWB measurement (which works out at 20ms) show a G2G of 8ms. By that token (and I don't profess to be an expert) I would deduce that the approximate BWB time for the panel that you are interested in would be approx 10ms?
Here's where I've been looking (you'll need to scroll down some): http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/us_eng/products/compchart_lcd.pdf

Yea I just bought the L90 Hyundai monitor as well, hopefully it will be good, as right now I'm just using a 19' crt, and I needed a second monitor anyways.

Response times printed on the specifications for an LCD can't really be trusted. The ISO standard for measuring these completely ignore a the entire range of response time possibilities and really only give you the best values of the set. For example, the Viewsonic VX924 has a 4ms GTG and 5ms Typical response time according to the packaging... This is true by the standard but the response time can get as high as 30ms for certain color changes. The V191b on the other hand stays below 15ms for the entire range of color changes, even though it's printed response time is higher.
Tom's Hardware reviews really go into this in depth. If you read those you can really see what I'm talking about.

Well, I bought a Samsung 930b the same day that BF2 came out.
I've played BF2 and WoW, and have noticed nothing poor about the display.
I really like this LCD.

I originally bought an L90D+ about 3 weeks ago, and sent it back after a week.
Compared to my 19" CRT it was replacing, the LCD looked like ass. Colors weren't quite right, blacks weren't very black, ect.
I have a Viewsonic VP191b (the overdrive 8-bit one) on the way from zipzoomfly right now, hopefully it will be better. This is my last attempt at an LCD, if I don't like this one I'm getting a NEC FE2111sb 22" diamondtron CRT.

Malakai, make sure you calibrate the LCD.
And post a review!
I've had my vp191 for 1,5 week now. I've just noticed that it's fast but it also has some kind of odd thing in fast games. In ET there is under certain circumstances some kind of bright light around moving objects. Don't know if it's the game or the monitor but I think it's the overdrive thing of the monitor. Anyone else seen this?
