alrighty then...

I just finished installing Win XP Pro 64 edition and everything is okay so far.

all except for a printer driver for my HP 1210 All-In-One printer. I went to HP's site and of course they dont have a 64 bit driver yet but I was wondering if anyone knows what would happen if I were to try to install the regular, 32 bit drivers?

I'm asking this because I did remember seeing something in the Win XP setup that said something about hardware designed for 32 bit drivers would work fine w/ XP 64 but I havent been able to confirm that.

so what do you guys (and gals) think? do you think my 32 bit drivers will work on my printer or do you think that I'm F-ed?

From MS:

Device Driver Installation
Windows XP 64-Bit Edition requires the installation of 64-bit drivers only.

Driver support is what's keeping me from using x64 Edition too. Logitech and HP need to hurry the hell up.

Or Intel, AMD and Microsoft need to slow the fuck down.

What's the point of a new OS that's supposed to support plug-n-play but is missing many drivers ?

It's an incentive and a platform for third parties to write drivers for it?

I'm checking internally to see we have any betas drivers that are safe for me to release publicly.

But yes, as someone said, Microsoft, Intel, and AMD should slow down. Hardware always outpaces software, but in times when companies are laying off people to save money, it might take a little longer to test and develop new drivers.

Which is harder?

Developing a multi-million component based CPU
Developing a multi-million lines of code OS
Recompiling a driver to work with a 64-bit OS

making new drivers is EASY. they just dont want to do it, period. they are lazy and stupid. the AMD-64s have been out for how long now? 2 years almost? 1.5? The hardest thing to do , was done first. The easiest...we are still waiting on.

how sad.

They might have been out that long, but M-soft didn't have an OS yet. If M-soft sent each a copy of the OS for them to test their drivers and send it to M-soft and get them driver signed and included before releasing a whole new OS that supports nothing but a CPU many of us would be at a better place right now. Plug-n-play is the name of the game, not catch-up.

interesting point.

It is true, 64 bit procesors have been out a while, but i bet if you ask logitech or some other company they 1. dont care about the small population of enthusiasts and will wait till its more commercially available to everyone. and 2. didnt even think about it until x64 was actually releaded...but that still seems like they could have made some basic drivers.

oh well
