I bought the Win XP pro upgrade it says. I was wondering since this is the whole version of pro, could this be used on a brand new system build?

if its an upgrade, you'll need a previous version of windows already installed

You need an original installation source from a previous version of Windows. 9x, NT4 or 2000 will work.

It doesn't have to be installed at all. Boot from the new XP CD, and during the setup, it will prompt you for a previous version of windows. Pop in the CD from a previous version of Windows, and it will continue.

I'm in a similar situation here, and reading Microsoft's upgrade path document leaves questions. I'd like to sort this out before purchasing a copy of XP Home Upgrade to avoid any frustrations.

My question is this - what qualifies as valid "previous version of windows" to use XP Home Upgrade edition during a clean system install (i.e. not going to upgrade the current 98se installation that exists on the hard drive)? Ive got both of these OS cd's:
- Windows 95 Full Version
- Windows 98se Upgrade Version

Much thanks in advance. Sometimes the most simple questions seem to confuse me the most, lol.

The CD key from the 98se will be sufficient to upgrade. The rationale is that you had Windows 95 and upgraded to 98, so the upgrade key will work to install XP home edition upgrade. :)
