This is the first time that i've actually had a hard drive die on me.

it was a maxtor 160 as a slave to the same exact drive.
The master was purchased probably 6-8 months prior to the one that died off.

It's a good thing I backed up 30 out of 120 gigs of that data

RMA info is all set, now I just have to package and ship the drive out.

I assume other people here have had to RMA to maxtor. Any idea on the timeframe?
Not that it's really important, but a ballpark figure would be good.

What have your experiences been with this stuff?...

When I last RMA-ed a drive to maxtor, I did the advance replacement thing, and it came within a few days. Sent mine back, and all was well. :)

Yeah, i thought about that, but then i went with the standard thing. I figured I would give myself a few weeks or so to cool off from this.

One of the reasons I did it that way was to get the packing material that they shipped in, so I could be assured that I met the specifications. Not just speed of replacement.

I still have all the retail packaging from when I bought it.

i always do an advanced RMA.. cause this is when i try all those tips/tricks to get the data off the drive one last time.. IE.. the freezer trick... which worked once. i just used it to lowlevel format the hdd cause i said F' the data.

so advance RMA if you can. (i go through hdd's about every 4-5 months, as the hdd's are used in a heavily accessed server)

Am I just this lazy? the drive is still sitting on my desk. LOL The problem is, the packaging i'm going to use is at my apartment,. i've moved into a house w/ my girlfriend, and i never go back there. I'll have to stop there tonight after work or something.
