HD Question

OK Question I am not using a Raid setup right now but would like to. I have 2 Western Digital 120 gig drives right now. But I like them new Western Digital Raptors. Is there a Large difference in them in a raid setup or just do raid on the 2 I have now.

What you have to ask yourself is... Do I need raid?
if you dont need it and are just experimenting with it... then use what you have.... Conversely a single raptor 740gd will be as fast as most consumber level hd's in raid....and more reliable and two of them raided is basically overkill for benchmarking only... imho

There is no real world performance benefit from using RAID. Don't even waste your time.

I've read artilces saying that RAID actually slows down game performance. And I've read articles that said the advantages are too small too see. And if you think about it they are. The biggest advantage is the warm glow in your heart that you have the quickest thing going.

Something happened to my RAID controller last week and the hard drives were not being detected, now I have 2 perfectly good drives, another 2 hours experience installing XP, and about 6 months of tweaking gone.

The next time I have four 5 gig hard drives, thats when I'll set up my next RAID. Never again with a hard drive that is big enuff to handle my needs storage wise.

RAID 0 giving mass performance gains is a myth that I think came from people RAIDing Raptors and mistaking the huge performance gains coming from the RAID array.

Fact:

Raptor HDD's will outperform any consumer level HDD's. Most of them by a large margin.

If you do want to buy a Raptor just buy it and put your OS and applications on that drive. Use your other drives for storage.
