My friend and I have to give a 50 minute presentation on Tim O'Brien (an author who wrote about Vietnam), and my friend has the movie We Were Soldiers on DVD. I was wondering if there is any way that I can take certain scenes out of it and put them in our powerpoint so that we don't have to close out of the power point and use the dvd player to skip around and try to find the scenes that we were going to use. The project due date is coming up so if you guys could help I would really appreciate it, thanks:)

Rip the dvd (DVD Shrink is a good program to use for this), and then pick out the clip using VirtualDub. You can make the file an mpg or avi and insert that into the presentation.

I've heard a lot of good things about VirtualDub but haven't tried it. I've been able to isolate scenes (after rip via DVDDecrypter) using DVD Shrink. It's kind of a pain, but most video editing is.

edit: forgot to mention that by using my method, you'll have to use another piece of software to convert to AVI or MPEG. Now that I think about it, acutally, doing it my way is really a pain. Try VirtualDub instead.

that brings up an interesting question . . . .is "extracting" certain scenes for a project like that illegal?

I would assume it is akin to 'sampling' in RAP. And radio play 'cuts', where anything under 15sec. is license free.

He's doing it for educational purposes, and he is not selling it. (We hope!! :p )
So, he should be ok..

While the fair use laws haven't been repealed, the DMCA prohibits the decryption of DVD's (i.e. ripping) and rebroadcast. This is not one I would like to try in court if I needed to.

I spotted this thread early and decided it fell under fairuse ;)

given the stated goals, and declined to ask how extensive the sampling might be :p

which I suggest we avoid

the DMCA provisions regarding Decryption are so widely skirted and potentially in conflict with both fairuse and backup rights that we dont seriously attempt to squash any and all discussion of them, as long as it doesnt get too specific.;)

Since you only need a certain scene, it would be eaisest if you used DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com/) to rip that particular scene in IFO mode, and then used AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) to convert the ripped VOB to divx/xvid

After you have your AVI file, you can use VirtualDUB to cut/edit it if needed.
