Could use some help: HD not booting up XP OS

My dads 02' gateway decided to die yesterday. Basically it seems that once it gets passed reading the ROM and tries to boot up the OS from the HD the computer restarts itself. I inserted the recovery disk and am left with the choice to repair using the recovery console or re-setup XP. But when i go to the repair function it asks for the name of the last installation which i dont have.

what do you mean by "the name of the last installation" ?

Try booting the system with just the root hard drive connected to the IDE chain. Remove any other hard drives or removable media drives.
